In the end, it was River Town who had the best spring of the contenders but with a wRC+ of only 95 it wasn’t enough to exceed the defensive quality offered by Etzel, who took the last slot.

It is an aging outfield though, so Town is in prime position for a call up during the season.

Anthony Veneziano was the surprise of the Spring, offering up 14 Innings across 5 starts with a 3.07 ERA to claim a place in the starting rotation to start the season. Gavin Stone was picked in the Rule 5 Draft as a potential 5th arm but an inability to keep the ball in the park means he will go back to the Dodgers system.

In addition, Scott Effross’ injury during Spring Training allowed Ryan Pepiot to keep a slot that he had probably pitched himself out of – with Liu Fuenmayor also having a strong spring to start the season in the Big Leagues.

Rule 5 Pick Joe Jimenez struggled through the Spring and returns to Arizona.
