June 15-17, 2037: at NY Mets (3)

A miserable three days in Queens as the Rays were swept by the Mets thanks to a blown game and two others in which they couldn't get much offense going.

It wasn't like they tore the cover off the ball in the opener but 3 should have been enough as they took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the 9th before Jadon Smith reverted to his early-season form and blew it, giving the Mets a 4-3 win. A solo shot from Luis Berumen (#15) and a 2-run go-ahead blast from Alex Rivas (#3) combined with a fine 6 4 2 2 1 8 outing from Joe Marlette should have been enough for the win, but Smith (0-5) blew his 3rd save and first since April when he put two on with one out, wild-pitched them to 2nd and 3rd, gave up the tying run on a sac fly, and then wild-pitched the winning run home. Arrgh.

The Mets jumped on Mario Urizar for 5 runs in the first 3 innings and coasted to a 6-1 win in the second game. Urizar (4-6) to his credit hung in there and saved the bullpen, finishing 7.2 8 6 6 3 3 but it was one ugly game. Art Bing's solo homer in the 8th (#3) spared them being shut out.

The offense was AWOL again in the finale as the Rays were 2-1 losers to the Mets. Danny Morales (2-3) deserved a better fate after going 5.2 3 2 2 3 6 but Wander Franco's solo shot (#11) in the 3rd was it.

Team record: 36-31. The sweep turned into a real disaster as Baltimore swept its series, sending the Rays from 1/2 up to 2 1/2 behind. Next up: An off-day to travel south to Atlanta for 3 games.
