So while I do agree that playing with C.M. off will keep it challenging, I would actually suggest playing with C.M. on if this is your first time playing and then just doing everything in your power to avoid dipping into abuse of commissioner powers.
My reason for suggesting this is that if it's your first time playing you are not going to have a real feel for all of the different tweaks for the individual settings. There may be things that you don't realize aren't to you liking or preference until you get to your first offseason (and at that point have invested X amount of hours into the game). And at that point you're going to have a lot more of a chance to tweak and adjust with Commish Mode on than if you had it off. What you probably don't want to do is get 100 hours into the game only to realize there is setting that you regret having on or off and then having to start everything over.... Having Commish Mode on will increase the odds of you being able to adjust on the fly since you will have more control.
But discipline yourself when it comes to abusing commish power
