The Commonwealth Youth League begins the 2310 season today with 64 teams vying for the championship. Last season, the Beantown Sprouts defeated the Taunton Giants, 3 games to 1, to win the Commonwealth Youth Series.
This season, both the Sprouts and Giants are considered to be in contention. In the North Region, Beantown is expected to battle the Castle Freedom and Hester Mechanists for the best record. In the South Region, Taunton is predicted to finish only one game back of fellow Samuel Morse Division mate, the Wareham Comets, for the best regional record. The Spectacle Island Specters are picked to have the third best record.
For best hitters, junior Marlborough Minigunners RF Riot Darton is expected to be the NR's winner. Other contenders include RF Naga Arakaki, Sr, Concord Iceboys; 1B Munson Morales, Fr, Saugus Launchers; and 1B Jimmy-James Sessoms, Jr, Marlborough. In the SR, LF Campy Madrid, Jr, Pawtucket Paw Sox is expected to be the best hitter. Other contenders include 2309 winner, 3B Mike Fountaineau, Jr, Wareham Comets; 3B Richie Fireball, Jr, Nauset Beach Lurk Hunters; and 1B Eddie Furnace, Jr, Spectacle Island.
The NR's best pitcher pick is the Mechanists' junior SP Buzzcut McDonald. Other contenders include two-time winner, SP Chase Seashores, Sr, CIT Academy; 2309 winner SP Alex Language, Jr, Beantown; and Sp Alien Haynes, Fr, Woburn. In the SR, sophomore SP Flea Gasper of the Giants is the pick as the best pitcher. Other contenders include SP Jazz Delgado, Sr, Pawtucket; SP Melvin Terminator, Jr, Wareham; and 2309 winner, SP Siltbean Ferguson, Soph, Taunton.
