CBO Analysis
Now that the CBO has changed to a 28-team, 130-game schedule, the structure of the schedule is much different. No longer do all teams play one another, for one. Also, the usual Tuesday-Wednesday and Friday-Sunday structure with Mondays and Thursdays mostly off is done. Now teams will play more games on average per week, which could mean games every day. That is how our first week of the season looks with every team playing seven games in the first seven games of the season.
Let's take a look at our first Power Rankings and then break down how teams looked in the first week of the season. Here are the current team power rankings for the Commonwealth Baseball Organization:
Teams (Total Points, Tendency):
1) Salem Witch Hats (133.6, ++)
2) Spectacle Island Reapers (133.6, ++)
3) Quincy Gunners (130.6, ++)
4) Vault 81 Dwellers (130.6, ++)
5) County Crossing Bloodbugs (129.6, o)
6) Goodneighbor Hancocks (106.9, ++)
7) Nordhagen Beach Party Boys (105.9, ++)
8) Diamond City Swatters (104.9, -)
9) Fort Hagen Silver Shroud (104.9, +)
10) Lexington Synths (104.9, ++)
11) Oberland T-51s (104.9, ++)
12) Sunshine Tidings Chemists (104.9, ++)
13) The Slog Ghouls (104.9, ++)
14) Cambridge Coursers (102.9, --)
15) Concord Radstags (102.9, --)
16) Egret Ninjas (102.9, --)
17) Roxbury Rad Sox (102.9, ++)
18) Nahant Celtics (78.1, -)
19) Starlight Killers (78.1, ++)
20) Glowing Sea Radscorpions (77.1, --)
21) Jamaica Plain Red Rockets (77.1, --)
22) FHE Yao Guai (75.1, --)
23) University Point Deathclaws (75.1, ++)
24) Atom Cats (46.4, --)
25) Easy Town Assaultrons (46.4, --)
26) Bunker Hill 75ers (18.7, --)
27) Malden Grognaks (18.7, --)
28) Southie Brews (15.7, --)
The biggest surprises in the Top 10 in the first week include Fort Hagen and Lexington being there. In the Bottom 5, Easy Town and Bunker Hill are big surprises.
Overall, five teams are tied for the best record at 5-2. Salem jumped to the top spot thanks to winning two straight over County Crossing, which was the last unbeaten team until that time. The Reapers also won their last two games to place them in the top spot.
Another pleasant surprise is that Cambridge is in a five-way tie for 1st place in the Institute League. The Coursers split with Sunshine Tidings, swept Easy Town, and then won one of three against Lexington to stand at 4-3 in their first week of existence. With 18 runs allowed in seven games, Cambridge is tied for 1st in the NCA with the Bloodbugs.
Bunker Hill, PAM's prediction to win the IL, is tied with Malden and Southie for the CBO's worst record. The 75ers are cold to start the season, with only ace SP Jason Tonelli (1-0, 3.38) pitching decently in the starting rotation and a CBO-low two home runs.
CBO Standings
CBO Players of the Week
Before we move on to the CBO Players of the Week, one player who stood out but did not get voted the player of the week is SP Pokey Chatman of Salem. The former 12th-overall pick in the 2305 draft out of Pawtucket, Chatman dominated in the GBRL for three years, compiling a 39-11 record with a 3.22 ERA in 67 starts. That included 535 strikeouts in 514.1 innings pitched. Last season, he made the leap to the Witch Hats where he pitched 64.2 innings with a 2-1 record and 2.51 in 40 relief appearances and an All-Star selection.
This season, he moved into the starting rotation. In two starts, he has had the best two starts in CBO history. Chatman has thrown two complete-game shutouts, pitching 18.0 innings with eight hits allowed, six walks, and 16 strikeouts.
April 11 - It's always a thrill for fans of the team and students of the game alike when a superstar in the making shows what he's got. Grandson Quarles, the Nahant Celtics 23-year-old center fielder, put himself in the spotlight last week making him the clear-cut choice for North Charles Association Player of the Week honors.
He ripped 16 hits in 28 at-bats, compiling a .571 average with 4 home runs and 7 RBIs.
One of the league's most exciting young players, Hax Kim of the Vault 81 Dwellers earned himself South Charles Association Player of the Week honors with a standout performance in last week's games.
For the week the 22-year-old first baseman had a lofty .417 average (10-for-24), collecting 6 home runs, 15 RBIs and 9 runs scored.
