June 29-30, 2037: at Baltimore (2)
The Rays didn't get the 2-game sweep to propel them into first place but they at least maintained the status quo by splitting with the Orioles and staying 1/2 game back in the AL East.
And they were glad to split because they dropped the opener 5-3 to Baltimore. Danny Morales (3-4) put them in a 4-0 hole by the second and finished 4 9 4 4 2 3. Tony Fisher's 2-run double helped get them back within 4-3 in the 3rd but that would be the last we'd hear from the offense.
Things didn't start off great in the second game when Gabe Bryant had to leave in the 2nd inning with hand soreness (he'll be fine) but Leo Gutierrez did a fine job in long relief and the offense came alive as the Rays took an 8-2 win to salvage the split. Gutierrez held things scoreless until the 5th when the bats put 4 on the board keyed by a Justin Blackwell RBI double and a 2-run homer from Art Bing (#4), who's been extremely productive (283/371/604) in limited action as the backup C. They kept tacking on after that including solo homers from the red-hot Tony Fisher (#21) and Joe Stack (#10). Meanwhile Gutierrez (3-1) earned the win going 4.2 4 2 2 0 5 in long relief.
Team record: 42-36. Next up: We head up I-95 for another 2-gamer, this time with Boston.
