July 1-2, 2037: at Boston (2)

The Rays' highly frustrating season continued with a pair of losses at Fenway, including one of the more epic bullpen meltdowns you'll see.

It's about time to swap out Joe Scheu for Leo Gutierrez in the rotation as the former was terrible once again and the Rays weren't competitive in a 6-1 loss to the Red Sox. Scheu (4-3) was tagged for 2 7 5 3 0 1 and has now allowed a whopping 81 hits in 55 innings this season to go with a 7.53 ERA. Our team defense is lousy this year so Scheu already was at a disadvantage but he's simply become unstartable. Danny Arroyave's solo homer (#5) was all the offense could muster.

The second game? Hoo boy, just an unbelievable loss as Joe Marlette was a brilliant 6 4 1 1 2 9 and the offense gave them an 8-1 lead highlighted by Wander Franco's 4 hits and Tony Fisher's 3-5 with a 2-run triple. But then came the bullpen as four pitchers had a hand in allowing 8 runs over the final 3 innings to stick the Rays with a 9-8 loss. Kenny Battle and Danny Mauricio started it by combining to allow 5 runs in the 7th, Ruben Abeyta gave up a solo homer in the 8th and then the egregiously inconsistent Jadon Smith (0-6!) coughed up a pair in the 9th to lose it on a 2-run Vlad Jr. double. This was Smith's 4th blown save to go with 6 losses although in some cases like today he was charged with both in the same game. Either way, no bueno.

Team record: 42-38. Not enough that have we slipped 2 1/2 behind Baltimore, we're now a game out of the 3rd wild card. Next up: Back home for 3 against Toronto.
