The August Super Post

CBO All-Star Game Results

All-Star Oberland T-51s' shortstop Stormin Normin MacDonald had a night to remember.

Not only did he take the field with the game's best players, he was also a huge factor in the 5-1 South Charles Association victory over the North Charles Association All-Stars.

"We had a meeting before the game, and I was struck by the talent in the room. Old stars, young stars, it's a game I'll never forget," MacDonald said. "I talked to a few of my friends from back home, and they told me to go out and win the game for them. I'm sure they'll be thrilled."

MacDonald has a lifetime average of .304, has played in 627 games, and has collected 93 home runs and 301 RBIs.

The house was rockin' -- Tarberry Field Forever, that is -- site of this year's Home Run Challenge. A jubilant rookie Hax Kim outlasted the rest of the field to win the title. The Vault 81 Dwellers first baseman vanquished Oren Gep in the final round by a score of 11-6.

"It was a battle of attrition," said Kim, "and I happened to be the last man standing."

CBO Players of the Month

NCA Hitter - Baktu DaWell battered North Charles Association pitchers all July and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around Commonwealth Baseball Organization long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 28-year-old DaWell told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 24 games, DaWell hit .434 with 7 home runs, 28 RBIs and scored 24 runs.

For the year DaWell has hit .361 with 27 home runs, 95 RBIs and scored 74 runs.

SCA Hitter - To survive in the bigs, you've got to be a scrapper like Barker Cocoa. It never pays to take a day off from the batting cages or to shrug off the advice of the hitting coach. It all paid off today as University Point's first baseman pinned down the South Charles Association Batter of the Month trophy today.

He hit .324 in July collecting 8 home runs, 17 RBIs and 29 runs scored.

This season Cocoa has banged out 114 hits in 344 at-bats for a .331 average with 42 home runs. He is getting on base at a .518 pace and his totals also include 95 RBIs and 114 runs scored.

NCA Pitcher - In July when the The Slog manager wrote the name "Fanne" on the lineup card, he knew he had a good shot at winning. Start after start in the month, Tiger Fanne took the hill, took charge and usually got the win.

He dominated with a 5-1 mark and 1.55 ERA in 6 starts. The gifted Ghouls star pitched 46.1 innings, fanned 35 and held opposing teams to a .246 average.

For his outstanding mound performance Fanne was named the NCA Pitcher of the Month by the baseball writers.

To date this season Fanne sports a 9-6 mark with a 3.01 ERA in 26 starting assignments. He has held the opposition to a .242 batting average and has 147 strikeouts in 188.1 innings.

SCA Pitcher - The Diamond City Swatters celebrated today after the news filtered through the clubhouse that Paul Stains had been selected as July's South Charles Association Pitcher of the Month. Stains's zest for the game has been a frequent topic on the sports pages and his numbers of late have made his fans even more enthusiastic.

"Our coaching staff really helps me prepare well," Stains said, "and the fans feed off good pitching. Your pitches just seem to have that extra pop to them when the fans are behind you and you feel confident you can get outs."

Stains tossed 52 innings last month, holding opponents to a .205 average while striking out 36 batters. In 6 starting assignments he came away with a 6-0 record, putting together an ERA of 1.21.

To date Stains is 13-6 in 25 starts with a 2.90 ERA and has 174 strikeouts in 211 innings.

NCA Rookie - Youngster Foo Fieterz emerged as the latest North Charles Association Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Fort Hagen deserved the honor, batting .326 with 8 home runs and 17 runs batted in. Is the month of July a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Fieterz enjoy the limelight.

In his season totals Fieterz has 31 home runs and a .320 batting average.

SCA Rookie - Gladder Questseeker's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Quincy first baseman has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In July he was voted the Rookie of the Month.

During the month he hit .390 with 2 doubles, 1 triple and 9 home runs. Questseeker also scored 17 times and drove in 29 runs.

Questseeker is batting .386 this season in 86 games with 20 home runs, 62 RBIs and 50 runs scored. He has 115 hits in 298 at-bats.

CBO Top Performances

On July 7, 15-year veteran, LF Boots Yellowhair of The Slog, had the top hitting performance of the month when he went 4 for 5 with a double, two home runs, a walk, two runs scored, and nine RBI in a 16-9 drubbing of Southie. It was the third-highest-ranked performance of the season, just behind Donny Kowalski's April 23 performance and Knife Bowie's June 5 performance. On the season, Yellowhair is batting .344 with 8 home runs and 32 RBI in 45 games played. He has missed over two months of the season with a severe hamstring strain. In his career, all with the Ghouls, Yellowhair has a lifetime .288 batting average with 144 home runs and 625 RBI. He has played 1165 games with The Slog.

July's top pitching performance was by SP Urm Rehfeldt of Roxbury in a complete-game shutout of Glowing Sea on July 16. It is the 4th-ranked pitching performance on the season. In the 113-pitch performance, Rehfeldt allowed two hits, walked a batter, and struck out eight. On the season, Rehfeldt is 15-6 with a 3.23 ERA in 25 games started and 172.2 innings pitched. In his lifetime with County Crossing and the Rad Sox, Rehfeldt is 126-62 with a 3.78 ERA.

MML Analysis

The MML season has two games left in the 108-game schedule, and we know three of the four division's results. In the Wade Boggs Division, the Watertown Armorers (FHE) have clinched with a 73-33 record and will have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. In the Ted Williams Division, the Worcester Cannons (FtH) have clinched with a 64-42 record. In the Carl Yastrzemski Division, the Plymouth Pilgrims (Mal) have clinched with a 63-43 record. While the Cannons and Pilgrims both know they will meet in the SLCS, the two teams face off in the final two games to determine which team will have home-field advantage. Plymouth currently leads the season series 4-3.

In the Matt Murtagh Division, the Lynn Fortune Finders (63-43, Obe) lead the Danvers Sonics (62-44, ET) and Everett Mutant Hounds (62-44, V81) by two games and the Finch Farm Shamrocks (61-45, Nah) by two games. The Fortune Finders visit Abernathy, the Sonics visit Marlborough, the Hounds visit Watertown, and the Shamrocks host Arlington in the last two games.

While there is still a chance to top it, the top hitting and pitching performances on the season came in July. On July 9, Needham's 1B David Stahl was 4 for 5 with four home runs, four runs, and 10 RBI in a 16-11 victory at Wellesley. Stahl tied the Stars League record for home runs in a game and set the RBI record in his performance. Just a day earlier, SP Lazy Macnamara of Foxborough had the season's top pitching performance against Brookline. In the 7-0 victory, Macnamara pitched a complete-game, one-hit shutout in which he struck out 11 batters and faced the minimum 27 batters. The lone hit by the Bandoliers Lumpy Pumpkinhead was followed by a double play to empty the bases.

MML Players of the Month

LL Hitter - Medford Medics fans believe they've got a talented young star in Prince Campbell.

He did nothing to dissuade that notion in July, as he hit .412 with 15 home runs, 33 RBIs and 31 runs scored.

The end result was the third baseman being named the Legends League Batter of the Month.

In his 2310 season totals, Campbell has 28 home runs, .367 BA, .454 OBP, 60 RBIs and 71 runs scored.

SL Hitter - July's outstanding offensive player in the Stars League has been picked, and the honor goes to the Needham left fielder David Stahl.

He won the award by batting .391, hitting 16 home runs, knocking in 36 runs and scoring 28 times.

So far this year Stahl is batting .352 with 37 home runs.

LL Pitcher - It was a prolific month of July for Graygarden reliever James Schwerdtfeger. He put his best foot forward with 10 saves in 11 save opportunities. Numbers so good that the Action Boys Legends League voted him the Pitcher of the Month.

During the month, the Action Boys bullpen specialist bagged 2 wins and no losses while compiling a 1.35 ERA. In 13.1 innings James Schwerdtfeger gave up 10 base hits, fanned 0, and walked 2. The hitters he faced batted .204 against him.

For the year Schwerdtfeger has earned 28 saves, made 42 relief appearances, fanned 28 hitters in 46.1 innings and posted an ERA of 1.55 and a 4-1 record.

SL Pitcher - When Rickey Schoolmaster takes the hill, he usually takes command of the game -- at least that's the way it was in July. The outcome was usually a Castle victory. His fine 6-1 performance earned him the Stars League Pitcher of the Month trophy.

The talented Strength hurler made 7 starts, worked 53 innings, permitted 47 base hits, and struck out 58 while putting up a 2.89 ERA.

For the year Schoolmaster has a 10-4 record with a 3.79 ERA in 20 starts.

RF Captain Kirk Abalon was named Series MVP with a 4 for 12 performance with a home run, two walks, two runs, and three RBI. The series-clinching run came in the bottom of the 8th inning of Game 3 when PH David Cannon hit a solo home run to take the lead. Cannon only had five official at bats in seven plate appearances in the regular season, going 1 for 5 with a home run, two walks, a run, and two RBI.

The Boston Minor Series has also begun, with Sanctuary Hills and Neponset Park currently tied 1-1 in the five-game series. The Criticals won Game 1, 14-7, while the Zetans took Game 2, 2-0. We'll give more coverage after the Series has completed.

The top hitting performance on the season was by Fiddler Green's RF Envie Nede in a June 2 performance against Bedford in a 20-5 victory. In the game, Nede was 5 for 6 with three home runs, five runs, and nine RBI. Nede's five runs scored tied the CA record.

SP Dew Ober of Charles View had the top pitching performance on the season on July 20 against CGP. Ober threw a complete-game, three-hit shutout in the Cannibals' 13-0 victory with a walk and nine strikeouts.

BMU Players of the Month

CA Hitter - Even though he is a newcomer to Boston Minor Union, Tyler Johnson put up some good numbers in July and earned the CA Batter of the Month award.

He was one of Winchester's offensive leaders with a .379 average in 18 games. He also racked up 12 home runs, 36 RBIs, and 19 runs scored.

For the month, Hoffman hit .353 with 11 home runs, 38 RBIs and 22 runs scored.

Currently Hoffman has 33 home runs and a .264 batting average.

CA Pitcher - Josh Agosto of Sanctuary Hills had an outstanding July with a 4-0 mark and was chosen the Pitcher of the Month in the Commonwealth Association.

He topped off the month with a 0.23 ERA in 5 starts, tossed 39 innings, fanned 26 and held opposing teams to a .187 average.

This year Agosto has compiled a 13-4 mark with a 3.51 ERA in 22 starts.

MA Pitcher - Adi Gallia was on cloud nine the entire month of July, capping it off with the Massachusetts Association Pitcher of the Month honors.

The Hull starter was spectacular in 5 starting assignments with 4 wins and no losses, 41 innings pitched, 35 strikeouts and a fine 2.20 ERA.

For the season Gallia has logged 8 wins and 1 loss and struck out 89 batters in 96.2 innings while compiling a 3.26 ERA.

GBRL Analysis

The GBRL also ended its regular season on July 21. Division winners were the Greentop Nursery Night People (JP), Satellite Array Riflemen (Atom), Cabot House Triggermen (BH), and Greater Mass Vans (FHE).

In the North League Championship, the Riflemen took the series, two games to one, over the Night People. 3B Beau Hemian of Satellite Array was named the Series MVP by going 5 for 12 with a home run, a walk, a run, and two RBI.

In the South League Championship, the Triggermen swept the Vans, two games to none. 2B Jax Jagg of Caboy House was named Series MVP, going 4 for 9 with a double, four runs, and two RBI.

Three games of the Rookie Series have been completed. In Game 1, Cabot House topped the Riflemen, 4-3. In Game 2, Satellite Array answered with a 7-2 victory. In Game 3, the Riflemen took a 2-1 series lead by topping the Triggermen, 7-4. Cabot House needs to win the next two games to win the series, while the Riflemen need just one more win.

The top hitting performance came early in the season when Union Hope's SS Goodboy Tyler was 5 for 6 with two doubles, two home runs, three runs, and seven RBI in a 17-6 victory over Coastal Cottage on April 17. SP Hugo Turk of Poseidon Energy had the top pitching performance on the season on June 20 in a 7-0 shutout of Freight Depot. Turk allowed just one hit with a walk and 17 strikeouts in the complete-game shutout. The 17 strikeouts fell just two short of the GBRL record of 19 set by five players: Junkyard Gourd, Lynly Starsung, Jayden Gray, John O'Brien, and Admiral Kelm. Both Starsung and Gray tied those records this season.

GBRL Players of the Month

NL Hitter - David Bloatfly is not used to being associated with Batter of the Month-caliber players, but today the Parsons Asylum second baseman joined that select company when the North League announced the results of July's voting.

Bloatfly totaled 23 hits, 15 walks, 9 home runs, 21 RBIs and 17 runs scored last month to put together a .371 batting average and .494 on-base percentage.

Bloatfly is batting at a .304 pace this season, picking up 88 hits in 289 at-bats with 42 home runs, 100 RBIs and 74 runs scored.

SL Hitter - Beem Ja may be much younger than other hitters in the South League, but he performed like a seasoned veteran in July to win the Batter of the Month award.

The 20-year-old Westing Estate second baseman hit .371 with 10 home runs, 28 RBIs and 18 runs scored.

In 33 games this season Ja is batting .349 with 44 hits and 12 home runs. He has scored 28 runs and driven in 41.

NL Pitcher - Rocky Narrows Blitz hurler Ro Rowe was rewarded today with the North League Pitcher of the Month honors. Rowe, 21, realizes that pitching isn't all about how hard you can throw, it's about accuracy and about picking yourself up even when you've had a run of bad luck.

"I'd like to say I don't give them anything to hit," said the Rocky Narrows starter, "but that's not true. Every pitcher gives up a long ball now and then. Usually there's at least one mistake in each at-bat, but you've got to battle through your mistakes and build some positive momentum. The rest will fall into place."

Things did fall into place for Rowe. In July he took the ball for 37 innings while notching 35 strikeouts, a 2.92 ERA and a 4-0 record.

This season Rowe has registered 9 wins and 5 losses in 17 starts with a 5.34 ERA.

SL Pitcher - July was a magical month for Roamer Hancock of Eastlake. He held the South League hitters spellbound, conjuring up a 4-1 mark and a 1.38 ERA.

Hancock also chalked up 5 starts, 32.2 innings and 38 strikeouts.

For this outstanding performance he was rewarded with the Pitcher of the Month trophy.

To date this season, Hancock has a record of 9 wins and 10 losses and a 4.59 ERA. He has appeared in 23 games and struck out 141 in 115.2 innings.
