Game 40: Boston Americans vs. New York Highlanders
Well so much for putting together a winning streak, as the New York Highlanders (19-21) throttled the Boston Americans (20-20) by a 9 to 3 score. Having a .500 record 40 games into the season is not how I saw this playing out.
Highlanders pitcher Wiley Piatt (4-5) limited the visitors to 3 earned runs on 8 hits, 3 walks, and 1 hit batsman; Game Score 57. On the other side of the ledger, Sam Leever (4-5) was tagged with the loss after he served up 7 earned runs on 13 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings of play; Game Score 16. Gus Thompson covered the final 2 innings in which he allowed 2 earned runs on 3 hits.
The New York batters were dialed in today, led by Jimmy Bannon (3 for 5, Double, Triple, Homerun, 2 Runs, 3 RBIs, Stolen Base), Wiley Piatt (4 for 4, Double, 2 Runs), Jesse Burkett (2 for 5m 2 Runs, RBI), and Harry Davis (1 for 4, Homerun, Run, 2 RBIs, Walk). The Americans' offense was powered by Bill Lange (3 for 4, Triple, Run, 2 RBIs), Fred Clarke (1 for 2, Run, Walk, Hit-by-Pitch), and Homer Smoot (2 for 4).
Player of the Game: Jimmy Bannon
