PIONEER SCORE TEN IN NINTH TO WIN AT LAKE ERIE
EDMONSON’S 2 HITS, 3 R.B.I. IN TOP OF 9TH KEY TO RALLY, CAP FIVE-HIT PERFORMANCE

ERIE, PENN. (July 27, 1866) – Lake Erie was in prime position to defeat Pioneer after eight innings of base ball at the Tenth Street Grounds on Friday, thanks to a 9-6 lead. Instead, visiting Pioneer turned the tables with a massive rally:

It was a 6-6 game going into the bottom of the eighth, when Lake Erie scored a run on an Ake Tyllesen double and two more on a Jari van der Sanden single to go up 9-6 ahead of Pioneer’s last turn to bat. What happened next was spectacular:
• BAT 1: 2B A. Black – Infield Single off B. Mack (scored)
• BAT 2: OF P. Koch – Single to LCF off B. Mack (scored)
• BAT 3: PH M. Joyce – 1-run Double to CF off B. Mack (scored)
• BAT 4: 3B J. Edmonson – 1-run Single to LF off B. Wilhelm (scored)
• BAT 5: PH H. de Traglia – Single to RF off B. Wilhelm (scored)
• BAT 6: SS W. Farrell – Run via Passed Ball, then 1-run Single to LF off B. Wilhelm (scored)
• BAT 7: C M. Darsigov – Fly Out to SS off B. Wilhelm
• BAT 8: PH H. Almasy – Single to LF off B. Wilhelm (scored)
• BAT 9: CF B. Koot – Reached via Fielder’s Choice w/ runner safe at HP (scored)
• BAT 10: A. Black – Single to RF off B. Wilhelm (scored)
• BAT 11: OF P. Koch – 1-run Sac Fly to CF off B. Wilhelm
• BAT 12: PH M. Joyce – 1-run Double to LF off B. Wilhelm (scored)
• BAT 13: 3B J. Edmonson – 2-run Double to LCF off B. Wilhelm
• BAT 14: PH H. de Traglia – Ground Out to SS off A. Brandenburg
• TOTAL: 10 Runs, 10 Hits, 3 Doubles, 2 Errors, 1 Passed Ball
The key figure in the Pioneer rally was 3B John Edmonson, whose single, double, & three R.B.I. in the top of the ninth were the biggest contribution by any Pioneer batsman. That inning of work left him 5/6 on the day with three runs and five R.B.I. He also added another double and a stolen base previously in the contest.

Both teams are out of contention for the Inland Championship, but nobody would have realized that with the effort put on display here, ESPECIALLY that of last-place Pioneer when their backs were to the wall.
