Nuka News Update

Reporting on the NWL, APL, NWLR, and BBL Leagues

by Evan Guy

1 July 2311

Wild, Orange Have Big Leads

The Wild Gatorclaws and Orange Tourists are divisional leaders as we head into July and the second half of the season.

Just four days ago, the All-Star Game was held. The Nuka World League put its best players on the field that day, and the game certainly showed that.

In the annual Midseason Classic, the South Bradberton Division came out over the North Bradberton Division by a final score of 8-6. Leading the way for the South Bradberton Division All-Stars was third baseman
Daniel Rousseaux of Quartz.

"I go out there and do my best every game, All-Star game or not," the star said after his great show, going 2-for-2 in the contest.

Lifetime in 709 games Rousseaux is batting .357 with 84 home runs and 400 RBIs.

It's that time of the season again, when the best of the best battle it out for Nuka World League bragging rights. Yes, it's time for the annual All-Star game! The North Bradberton Division All-Stars will take on the South Bradberton Division All-Stars in a star-studded showdown.

Switching to the month's top players, at only 19 years of age, Wizard of Oz Smith could very well have many more months like this last one during his career.

That would be great news for fans of the Victory Cave Crickets, as June was one to remember for the third baseman and he has captured the Nuka World League Batter of the Month award.

On the month he hit .467 with 5 home runs, 24 RBIs and 21 runs scored.

For the season, Smith is batting .486 with 101 hits and 14 home runs. He has scored 50 times and batted in 54.

Franklin William Kidd had an outstanding June -- so good that the Nuka World League presented him with the Pitcher of the Month Award earlier today.

"There's no way to know where the Bloodworms would be without Kidd," one fan is quoted as saying.

In June Kidd dominated the competition, running up a 4-0 record, a 3.15 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 34.1 innings.

This year, Kidd has a 4-3 record with a 4.06 ERA.

Wizard of Oz Smith earned June's Rookie of the Month honors in the Nuka World League for last month's performance. The boyish Victory third baseman might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Smith hit .467 with 5 home runs, 24 RBIs and 21 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

Thus far this season, Smith has hit .486 with 14 home runs, 54 RBIs and scored 50 times.

In the APL, the current leaders are the Kiddie Kingdom Cappies and the Nuka Town Operators.

Hunter Wilde put together a good June to earn the Amusement Park League Batter of the Month prize. A virtual unknown, he made the most of his chance to prove to Dry Rock Gulch officials that he belongs on the big league roster.

The Convicts first baseman posted a .364 batting average with 8 home runs, 20 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

The Nuka Town Operators bullpen was superb in June -- and Steve Slocums was a big reason for that success. He was named the Amusement Park League Pitcher of the Month today.

He picked up 6 saves in 7 save opportunities and had 5 strikeouts in 11.1 innings. Slocums racked up 2 wins and no losses.

The NWLRL is led by the Nuka Jolly Elves and the Nuka Plant Electrics.

Coal Weedeater has a lot going for him. The Northpoint Reservoir first baseman just broke into the majors this year and now the NWL Rookie League has just picked him as its top hitter for June.

In 17 games last month this outstanding rookie batted .387 with 13 home runs, 29 RBIs and 21 runs scored.

The Pitcher of the Month in the NWL Rookie League for June was Nuka Plant's star reliever Leprechaun MacMillan.

"I was wondering if relievers were even eligible for this thing," MacMillan joked with reporters. "I guess the voters do know there's actual pitchers down there in the pen."

The Electrics bullpen ace collected no saves and 7 strikeouts in 10.1 innings, holding the opposition to a .176 average and posting a 0.87 ERA and a 4-0 record.

Finally, the Bradberton Boys League season has completed.

It was all about winning for the Fizztop Mountain Conquerors -- and win they did.

There was nothing fancy in how they went about it, players said, they just prepared mentally and physically and then went out and played baseball.

"We did the little things right and we did the big things right," said first baseman Yrsa Minor, who was named series MVP. "Now we're the league champions."

Fizztop Mountain defeated the Chicopee Galaxy by a score of 5-2 at The Operating Table to take the series 2-0.

"Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you make your own luck," said Fizztop Mountain manager Howie Doing. "We got lucky a few times, but mostly we did the right things by being prepared for each game and playing the game the way it's meant to be played."

Award winners will be announced later.

Fog Division Tight, Cranberry Island in Control of Harbor Division

The Fog Division is currently tied between the Eden Meadows Anglers and Echo Lake Harbormen as we return from the All-Star Break. In the Harbor Division, the Cranberry Island Hermit Crabs hold a 5.5 game lead over 2nd-place Far Harbor.

The Harbor Division All-Stars reigned supreme on June 27 at the DiMA Dome, with a 13-4 triumph over the Fog Division All-Stars.

Harbor Division shortstop Ricky Day-Z led the way for the winning club, putting up a 2-for-2 mark to earn game MVP honors.

"We had some fun out there," he said. "We've got a great league and a great team and I'm not surprised we won."

What's the best league? The Fog Division or the Harbor Division? The answer will be found in the Vim! League All-Star Game. All the votes have been counted and tabulated, all the players have been selected, and they will decide the question on the baseball diamond.

Chris Knickerbocker is not used to being associated with Batter of the Month-caliber players, but today the Echo Lake right fielder joined that select company when the Vim! League announced the results of June's voting.

Knickerbocker totaled 43 hits, 2 walks, 11 home runs, 38 RBIs and 20 runs scored last month to put together a .413 batting average and .413 on-base percentage.

This year, Knickerbocker has hit at a .403 pace and produced 64 RBIs, 18 home runs and scored 42 runs.

No doubt about it!
Far Harbor starter Keith Lighthouse earned his Vim! League Pitcher of the Month award.
He made that very clear as he mowed his way through league hitters in June.
During the month Lighthouse chalked up a 4-0 record with a 1.76 ERA.

The Ghoul Whales star made 6 starts and surrendered 44 hits in 46 innings. He struck out 30 and walked 11.

On the year, Lighthouse has compiled a 7-4 mark with a 3.55 ERA.

Ricky Day-Z is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Vim! League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In June the Cranberry Island hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .326 average with 28 hits, 6 home runs and 23 RBIs.

This season, Day-Z is hitting .285 with 8 home runs.

In the MDIL, the Cliff's Edge Actors lead the Southwest Harbor Rippers by a game in the Small Bertha Division. In the Old Longfellow Division, both the Oceanarium Oceanics and Eagle's Cove Harpooners are tied with a 16-12 mark.

Even though he is a newcomer to Mount Desert Island League, Vince Eller put up some good numbers in June and earned the MDIL Batter of the Month award.

He was one of Oceanarium's offensive leaders with a .387 average in 16 games. He also racked up 12 home runs, 26 RBIs, and 17 runs scored.

Adoptee Packwood of the Actors bewildered opposing batters in June and was honored as the Mount Desert Island League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

The Cliff's Edge starter sparkled last month with a 4-0 record and 0.88 ERA. He made 4 starts, tossed 30.2 innings and had 14 strikeouts.

The Western Atlantic Division is tied between the Glowing Grove Brainiacs and Kitteredge Rad Rabbits in the VRL. In the Eastern, the Longfellow Pips lead the Fringe Cove Champions by four games.

For a rookie just breaking in, Big Bob McGonagil certainly put together a successful month. It was good enough to win the VRL Batter of the Month award for June.

The 22-year-old right fielder for the Glowing Grove Brainiacs hit .328 with 12 home runs, 31 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

Cheese Wagstaff of MS Azalea had an excellent June with a 2-1 record and was selected as the Pitcher of the Month in the VIM! Rookie League.

He finished the month with a 1.44 ERA while piling up 29 strikeouts in 25 innings and holding opposing hitters to a .226 batting average.

Finally, the Maine Youth Leagues season has come to an end. And that was all she wrote on the 2311 Maine Youth Series. With a 9-3 victory, the Sunset Park Anglers swept aside the National Park Rangers 2-0 and set off a much-anticipated celebration.

"It was a lot of hard work," said winning manager Matt Grigsby. "But it was good hard work and a lot of fun along the way."

The Anglers were all business this year, with their eyes fixed squarely on the goal of winning the team's 1st championship. The champs finished the regular season 24-15 and claimed first place in the Great Diamond Island League.

"We had our doubters along the way," series MVP Gil Hat said with a smile. "But we made them eat crow today."
