BMU Regular Season Ends
For the lucky few going to the playoffs, the season is just beginning. For most, the postseason is a just a distant pipe dream -- a season that could have been. Their season is over except for the bashing, rehashing and revamping that takes place in the hot stove league. It's now time for the dominant teams to do battle for the 2311 Boston Minor Union championship. It will be decided in the Boston Minor Series. Only the best will be left standing.
It's playoff time. The best teams have emerged from the divisional battles and now it is the survival of the fittest. Only one team will survive and they will be crowned the Boston Minor Union champions. Here are the matchups in the Association Championship:
Taffington Boathouse Spy Hunters (Egr) vs Winchester Bashers (DC) and West Roxbury Mole Rats (FHE) vs Mayoral Shelter Tricentennials (BH).
The Mole Rats had the most thrilling finish to the season, defeating Hull 3-1 in a play-in game to clinch the Downtown Boston League. West Roxbury starter Wes O'Cop pitched a good game to help his team take down the Hull Lead Bellies, 3-1. With the win, the Mole Rats finished at 53-36.
Ogee Peebles had a direct impact on the outcome. Peebles contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put West Roxbury up, 2-1.
"The fact of the matter is that we had a shot to win," said losing manager Melon Sanderson, former five-time All-Star in the CBO.
GBRL Season Done, Four Teams Remain
The 2311 regular season is now history, and all the championship contenders have been determined. The Greater Boston Rookie League playoffs will begin in just a few days. This is the renowned "Second Season," which decides the league's top team. The winner of the Rookie Series will be this year's champions.
The regular season has closed and now the "real" season begins. The playoffs in Greater Boston Rookie League start today and all the clubs that made it into the League Championship are hungry to claim the ultimate prize: the champion's mantle -- the Rookie Series title. The playoffs begin today with these matchups:
Croup Manor Inspectors (Nah) vs Union Hope Lifegivers (SI) and Big John Salvagers (Rox) vs Greater Mass Vans (FHE).
In the Southeast Division, the Big John Salvagers locked up a win at Big John's Salvage Park, knocking off the Poseidon Energy Mongrels, 8-4, in a play-in game to determine the division winner. On the mound for Big John was right-hander Marse McCarthy. He played a major role in the triumph. Floatee Fuentes earned the save, his 22nd in 25 tries. Big John finished with a record of 54-35 with the win.
In his 119-pitch effort, McCarthy allowed 2 runs on 2 hits over 8.1 innings. He walked 5 and struck out 10.
"Marse pounded the zone relentlessly tonight," said Big John manager Peter Kaprielian.
