MLB Standings

The Royals drop into a tie for the lead in the AL Central (with the White Sox) and 4 games back from the AL (and baseball) leading 33-19 Yankees. They Phillies are leading over in the west, a 33-21 record making them the only other team in baseball with a .600+ winning record.

Divisionally, it was a Guardians month as Kansas City opened up the month dropping two-three at Cleveland before matching that with a 2-1 home series victory at the end of the month.

Four series on the road vs AL teams made for a tough month, with the Royals beating the Blue Jays (29-25) and the Avalanche (25-29) 2-1 but dropping three-four to the Mariners (27-26) and ending the month getting swept in a three-game series by the Rays (29-25). Getting swept 0-3 at home by the .500 Rangers was disappointing but the AL West bottom dwelling Angels (22-33) were swept to ensure an even home record.

In the only interleague Series, the Royals hosted the 26-27 Cubs and took the series 2-1.

Two months into the season and the usual story of a stronger pitching corps versus batting core is true in Kansas City. However, two areas of concern/frustration are defense and stolen bases – one which has dropped from its usual AL-leading position, while the other has regressed despite a strategic tweak to make what is a reasonably quick, base stealing team more aggressive.

It was Will Gasparino (-52 wRC+) with the cold bat in May, albeit it from a very limited sample size, while Bobby Witt Jr. (99 wRC+) has started to come around with a league average month, although with a poor defensive month. Tim Storer (132 wRC+) continued his great start to the season with 7 HRs in the month pacing a .558 slugging %.

Steve Carter (-2.2 ZR) will have to have his defensive assignments carefully managed while Sheng-En Lin (-1.1 ZR) has struggled covering SS on occasion and learning on the fly.

Roles reversed in the starting rotation in May as Mason Barnett (100 ERA+) was back to league average (albeit with a walk rate of 10% that warrants review) while J.J. Paniagua (68 ERA+) struggled through his 6 starts, giving up 8 HRs, and four games with 4+ runs.

In the bullpen, Nicanor Berns (63 ERA+) has not been able to lower his walk rate and will be given a rest in Omaha, but William Schmidt (147 ERA+) had a better FIP (3.35) as part of a bullpen that is generally firing well.

Jonathan Fleri (0.98 ERA AAA) has excelled at AAA and, having not given up a single HR across 18 innings (something he struggled with in the Spring), earns the recall in place of Berns.

Traded 34-year old CF Dominic Fletcher to the Toronto Blue Jays, getting $500,000 in cash in return.

Losing Paz for over a month was a disappointment for the fragile pitcher, with the Royals choosing to promote vastly experienced Luis Garcia (2031 MiL FA) to fill in, and he had a 5.2-inning, 5 Hit no decision first outing.

The Royals decided to take no chances with 3B Jeremy Rogerson when he strained his forearm, sending him to the IR and taking the chance to recall Hunter Owen from his rehab assignment.

Backup Catcher Holcombe’s fragility was exposed as he sustained an injury running the bases. Experienced Miguel Palma (2031 MiL FA) came up and appeared in 3 games.

After going 9-19 in April, Dominic Fletcher went 3-35 in June which was more aligned to his 2031 bat. His glove was still trending in the wrong direction (a -2.3 ZR over two months) and the Royals decided to get out of his $2m contract. The Blue Jays were willing to take all of his contract and an additional $500k in cash, which the Royals happily accepted.
