Leading the AL Central puts the Royals in a strong position at the All Star Break but they have some clear areas for improvement. OF Will Gasparino (26 wRC+) has struck out almost 40% of the time and could do with a reset in Omaha although a 40 rating for Avoid K’s puts his long-term viability in question. Likewise, DH Hunter Owen’s (88 wRC+) scouted rating has dropped to a 40 and his strikeout rate is 5% higher than any other season. A power-bat 1B will be something the Royals explore in the run up to the trade deadline.

At the other end of the scale, Tim Storer (117 wRC+) has provided elite defence at 2B while hitting 14 HRs and getting on base at a .346 rate. Surprisingly, this wasn’t enough for an All-Star nomination, but the Royals did have two bats selected, outfielders Wyatt Langford (127 wRC+) and Billy Mumaugh (126 wRC+). Langford is having the a contract year, on pace for 4.4 WAR and potentially pricing himself out an extension with the Royals while Mumaugh is justifying his contract extension in his 2nd season in the league.

Aiden May (202 ERA+) has been the standout of the starting rotation, earning himself his first All-Star selection behind a 2.89 FIP. Mason Barnett (75 ERA+) has struggled with hits with what is a weaker Royals defence, a profile similar to 2030 giving up an ERA 2 runs (from 2 hits) higher than that year. Injured in his final start before the break, it is tough to see the Royals sticking with him this season, let alone picking up his Team Option for 2033.

The bullpen has settled down, anchored by 1st time All Star William Schmidt (135 ERA+) with only fellow stopper, and reigning AL Reliever of the Year, Wen-Hui Pan (83 ERA+) struggling. Pan’s workload over the last two seasons (268 innings over a MLB-season 162 games) may be catching up with him and T.J. Brock will step up to the Closer role for the next month, at least. As always, elite relief arms will be looked at ahead of the deadline.

The American League defeated the National League in the All Star Game, Billy Mamaugh going 0-2, but William Schmidt getting the win, pitching a one-hit innings in the 3rd. May and Langford did not appear in the game.
