MLB Standings
The Royals (59-46) use a strong July to extend their leaf in the AL Central to a season-high 5 games. They trail only the Red Sox (62-43) in the AL standings while the Mariners (57-47) lead the AL West. It’s the Astros (55-48), the Yankees (54-49) and the White Sox in the Wild Card places {wild card} although there are six teams within ½ a game.
In the National League, the Padres (62-44) are a ½ game behind the Red Sox for best record in baseball, with The Phillies (60-43) the third team with 60 games, and the Pirates (59-44) close behind. The Wild Card race isn’t quite as close with the Brewers (59-45), the Giants (58-47), and the Rockies (57-48) taking the three spots.
Kansas City Results
The Royals had their best month of the season, going 16-7, winning five series out of eight. In the AL Central, they split a four-game home series against the White Sox and swept the Tigers 3-0.
They won both AL series, 2-1 against the Rays, and a sweep of the Orioles. Interleague play saw their only series loss of the month. Having beaten the Braves to clinch the series at the start of the month, they then went on the road and beat the Diamondbacks 2-1 and split a two-games series against the Cardinals before dropping a home series against the Dodgers 2-1. They finished the month taking the first game of a home series against the Brewers.
Kansas City Team Statistics
Will Gasparino (-120 wRC+) was not getting enough bats, and not doing enough with the ones he received, to justify a place on the roster.
Tim Storer (119 wRC+) carried on where he left off after his All-Star snub, recording almost 3 WAR for the month.
Luis Gotay (100 wRC+) continues to provide solid offence with elite outfield defence.
Aidan May (210 ERA+) has been the star of the starting rotation this year, putting together another strong month.
Cade Townsend (85 ERA+) gave up 5 HRs in his first two starts of the month but finished with a 7.1 inning, one hit outing against Detroit which he will hope to carry into August.
Transactions & Injuries
Friday, July 23rd , 2032Sunday, July 25th , 2032- Traded 24-year old minor league LF Pamphile DeCaro to the San Antonio Avalanche, getting 36-year old RHP James Karinchak (retaining 40%) and $1,000,000 in cash in return.
- Optioned LF Will Gasparino to Triple A Omaha.
The hunt for a power hitting first baseman took the Royals to Washington where
Luis Zesati had struggled in his first season in the Major Leagues but ratings of above average contact and a plus power bat with plus defence at 1B suggest he is positioned for success. The Royals had to retain 75% of Owen’s contract, as well as giving up plus contact 1B
Sergio Perales and two organisational pieces but hopefully the added power will give the Royals the extra offence they need through October.
The second trade the Royals made was to secure an elite reliever. The Avalanche are out of contention and looking to ship payroll. The Royals played hardball, requiring the Avalanche to retain 40% of salary, and to add $1m to the deal.
Karinchak, although now 36, still has plus stuff, with a plus fastball and plus-plus curveball. He had added almost 2 WAR in a closing role with the Avalanche, a role he will take as a secondary for the Royals. De Caro was an organisational piece the role were happy to part with to secure the Karinchak. The addition of everyday 1B Zesati had freed up Goodman to play in the outfield, making Gasparino a luxury for the Royals; he has been sent back to Omaha to try to turn his season around.
