Final Regular Season Standings
The Royals (95-67) go 1-3 to finish the season but still win the AL Central by 8 games, losing the final game of the series to Washington (75-87) before dropping two of three to the Mets (77-85) in New York.
The Yankees (86-76) hauled in the Red Sox (85-77) to claim the East with the Red Sox joining the White Sox (87-75) in securing a wild card spot. It’s two into the post season in the West as well, division winners the Rangers (87-75) joined by the Mariners (82-80) who finish a game up on the Astros (81-81).
Over in the East, the Phillies (91-77) had already wrapped up the East while the Brewers (96-66) secured the Central, and best record in baseball, and are joined in the post season by two more Central teams, the Cubs (90-72) and the Pirates (87-75). The Pirates beat out divisional rivals the Cardinals (86-72) by one game for that spot and eliminated defending champions the Colorado Rockies (86-76). The West will have two representatives though with the 93-69 Padres winning the division by a game from the Giants (92-70).

The Royals finished with the highest batting average (.261) and the lowest ERA (3.70) in the AL to show their high level of performance hitting and pitching. Coupled with finished 2nd in Defensive Efficiency (.701) and Zone Rating (+30.8), the Royals earned the right to call themselves the best in the AL.
Home runs (10th) and walks (12th) continue to be a position of weakness for the Royals bats while the pitchers give up a lot of walks (11th) to earn their strikeout crown (1st – 1,602).
