KNICKERBOCKER TAKES THRILLER OVER MUTUAL
JONES & PETERSON PUT IN STAR PERFORMANCES; KNICKERBOCKER CLINCHES NYC CHAMPIONSHIP

NEW YORK CITY (July 20, 1867) – Mutual made things exciting late, but in the end first-place Knickerbocker won an extremely exciting contest at the Elysian Fields on Saturday, clinching the New York City Championship in the process:

After scoring twice in the 6th Knickerbocker was ahead 15-7 and looked to have the win in the bag and all sealed up. However, Mutual roared back with five runs in the 7th to make a game of it before the hosts scored an insurance run and held on from there to clinch the New York City Championship with eleven games left to play in the season.

The day was dominated by two Knickerbocker batsmen: 6x All-Star Jerald Peterson and 1858 BotY & MVP Albert Jones. Peterson was fourth in the Knick lineup and did the following with the bat…

The win not only clinched the NYC pennant for Knickerbocker but it moved their record to 46-14, the best in the NBBO by four games – Shamrock & St. John’s are 42-18 – with ten games left to play. They will be going to the Tucker-Wheaton Cup for the third year in a row, and it looks extremely likely that they will finish as the #1 team in the NBBO for the second time in three seasons, an incredible achievement for the club given that they compete what is supposed to be the NBBO’s toughest region.
