MLB Standings

The Royals have been up and down in April but end with a 15-12 record and a 1 ½ game lead in the AL Central division. The Orioles are a game ahead at 15-10 to lead the American League while the Mets are off to an impressive 18-8 to lead baseball a month into the season.

The Royals continued their dominance over AL Central rivals, although they did drop a series 2-1 to the Twins before beating the White Sox (3-1 at home, 2-1 on the road) twice and winning the first game of a road series against the Tigers to finish the month.

It was a similar story against other American league teams for Kansas City. After dropping two of three on the road in Baltimore, they beat Houston and Baltimore 2-1 at home, before splitting a four-game home series against Houston.

The red-hot Mets took two of three games in New York in the Royals only cross-division series.

The Royals bats have offset a strangely struggling rotation. The Royals lead the AL in most batting categories, even cracking the top six for home runs. Bobby Witt Jr. has taken advantage of the latest patch and has 11 stolen bases in the month after only cracking 30 in total twice over the course of this save! The arms are struggling with walks (tied 11th), as well as defensively (5th efficiency, 7th zone rating), meaning the 11th and 4th ranked starting and bullpen ERA combines for an 8th best 4.31 overal ERA.

Juan Zubia is looking to force more opportunities after posting a 235 wRC+ over his first 30 plate appearances while Danny Petty (113 wRC+) works hard to hold him off! In the outfield, Bryce Eldridge has 7 Home Runs in the first month of the season although both Luis Gotay and Edgar Manzo have recorded negative ZR over the month.

Cade Townsend (61 ERA+) has had a difficult first month of the season, although a .436 BABIP suggests there is some bad luck involved (as well as some poor support with a 3.88 FIP compared to 7.24 ERA) and the Royals trust he will return to form over his coming starts. In the bullpen, Danny Petty (999 ERA+) has yet to give up a run and has allowed only two hits in his 7.1 innings pitched but Blade Tidwell (75 ERA+) has struggled to adapt to life as a Royal so far.

  • Purchased the contract of RP Eric Cook from Triple A Omaha.

Both Will Gasparino (2026, 3rd round) and William Bergolla were out of options so the end of Spring Training saw them offered out to the rest of the league. Detroit offered the best return, in Major League ready Christian Doty and cash.

Doty was subsequently sent on to the Pirates, for 21-year-old prospect Chris Lee, a plus defender with plus base stealing and the potential for above average contact with average power, and sending back most of the cash from the Gasparino/Bergolla trade.

Marcos Paz got suspended for 11 games, giving Jonathan Fleri his chance while T.J. Brock’s season-ending injury opened the door for Jacob Misiorowski (an 8 year MLB veteran with plus plus stuff) to join the roster.

Billy Mumaugh’s injury gave the Royals the chance to go a bit more traditional and add an extra arm, Eric Cook being promoted from AAA and Bryce Eldridge moving into the outfield.
