MLB Standings
There is some separation at the top of the American League with the Mariners (66-40) and Yankees (62-44) the only 60-win teams at the end of the month. The White Sox (58-49) lead the Central where the Royals sit third, with an equal 53-53 record with the Tigers.
The National League has tightened up with only the one 60-win team, the Padres (63-44) comfortably leading the West while it is the Marlins (58-47) and the Cardinals (58-47) with slender leads in the other team divisions.
As would be expected in July the Wild Card standings are close with seven teams in the American League within three games of a Wild Card, and six teams within four games over in the National League. With a very active trade deadline, the next month will be crucial for teams with playoff aspirations.
Kansas City Results
A strange month for the Royal which started out splitting a home series against the weak Guardians 2-2 before 2-1 series victories, at home against the Rays and on the road in Colorado, giving a 6-4 start to the month. Any pre-ASG positivity was swept away in a five-game road trip losing streak, losing both games in St. Louis and all three games in Boston.
Things did not really improve coming out of the All-Star Break as the Royals dropped two of three at home to the White Sox, and now had gone 1-7 since the draft. The revamped team, see transactions below, managed to find some form to end the form, and keep themselves relevant, with a 3-0 sweep at home to the Diamondbacks, before taking the first two games of a home series against the Cubs, including scoring 20 runs in the first game of the series!
Kansas City Team Statistics
Kansas City continues to be a bat driven team in 2033 with NL leading marks across the batting statistics, from batting average to slugging percentage. Positively, the runs scored has gone from 6th to 3rd over the course of July, helped by the 20 runs in one game against the Cubs!
The pitching continues to be a challenge but one that the Royals have addressed through one blockbuster trade, along with the promotion of several young arms and a redeployment of the pitching set up.
With the exception of
Danny Petty (96 wRC+) every starter had a above league average month by the wRC+ metric. Top of the pile was
Billy Mamaugh (261 wRC+) who was rewarded with the AL Batter of the Month award after a 1.380 OPS including 7 HRs in the month.
The shake up of the pitching staff makes comparisons hard for the month of July but there are clearly some struggling arms (
Misiorowski,
Schmidt,
May) that may be replaced from within to give them a rest over the final couple months of the season.

It was one of the busiest months of Stewart’s tenure in Kansas City as two major shakeups were accompanied by a combination of injuries and bullpen changes to see a revamped Royals roster to end the month.
On the first day of the month, underperforming back up Catcher
Walt Day was traded to the Tigers for
Christian Cerda, a similarly rated defender with a superior eye offsetting weaker contact. Both catchers have a similar profile so the $20m included in the deal was a strong addition to the July war chest.
On the same day, KC moved to solve the defensive hole that had been Centerfield. The Giants
Drew Burress is an elite defender with two CF Golden Gloves to go with his 2029 ROTY Award. In year one of an 8-year, $166.6m contract this would have been too rich for the Royals so creativity was required. Sending
Bryce Eldridge back the other way was the core of the deal, and the addition of overperforming SP
Josh Olaniyan, and 24-year old prospect C
David Isaza allowed the Royals to convince the Giants to retain all of Burress’ contract plus contribute $20m in cash. This sets the Royals outfield for the rest of the decade, pairing Burress with All-Stars Billy Mumaugh and Jimmy Goodman. The fans reacted
positively to this news, while the acquisition of a Gold Glove winner aligned with goals of Royals’ ownership.
Pitching-wise,
Mike Hoffer returned from inury to take Josh Olaniyan’s place while
Eric Cook was sent down to Omaha,
Eddie Baquerizo replacing him in an effort to jumpstart the bullpen. The run of five losses heading into the All-Star break so a further change, prospect
Curt Bogans earning his first call up at the expense of
Jonathan Fleri.
A couple of batter injuries heading into the All-Star break saw
Bobby Witt Jr. return from rehab in place of
Juan Delgado while
Chris Maguire came back to the big leagues when
Tim Storer got injured.
The second big moving day came the day following the All-Star Game as the Royal went all in on the season. Firstly,
Luis Gotay had been underperforming with the bat and had proven unplayable at CF so was traded to the Red Sox for a long shot pitching prospect and cash; however, this allowed the Royals to call up
Enny Mijhail Van Dyke as 4th outfielder. Delgado and Storer being injured had put pressure on the infield defence and so the Royals decided to sacrifice their 5th OF in
Sheng-En Lin and call up 2029 trade acquisition
Ed Nicholson.
However, that decision was blown out of the water as the Royals decided they had to shore up their starting rotation while their young arms were acclimatising to the Major Leagues. Four-time All-Star
Chase Dollander was in the final year of his Rockies contract and on the trading block. The Royals were able to use $40m of cash secured earlier in the month, along with 2032 1st Round Pick
Panthea Theothanou, who scouts project as a second-division starter, to secure the rental of
Dollander, including prospect reliever
Rozelle in the deal as a bonus.
David Hagaman was the man to make way in the bullpen, as part of a major revamp that saw Dollander joined by the return of
Marcoz Paz to the starting rotation and all of the young arms sent to a traditional bullpen for the remainder of the season.
Losing Goodman for 5-6 weeks at the end of the month hurt but the bright start from Enny Mijhail Van Dyke meant the Royals are confident their batting line up can survive the remainder of the season without Goodman.
