Yeah I think the no variation is what was mentioned above, there are just limited animations. There may only be so many throwing animations. The slow runners could have advanced from a wide throw but I'm not sure the game has an animation for a wide throw that isn't an error
I know personally I've seen trail runners thrown out. Even to end innings sometimes. But this does seem to be far less common then both runners making it safely
