England
- Newton Heath, Sunderland and Lincoln relegated to the Second Division
- Grimsby, Sheffield United and Rotherham promoted to the First Division
- Ardwick renamed to Manchester City
- Middlesbrough Ironopolis resigned from the league for financial reasons, they folded soon after
- Northwich Victoria resigned from the league for financial reasons, they returned to regional, amateur ball
- Bury, Leicester and Burton Wanderers join the league
Scotland
- St. Bernard's is relegated to Division Two
- Clyde is promoted to Division One
- Thistle BC (Glasgow) fold
- Northern BC were not re-elected into the league (they would fold in 1897)
- Airdreonians and Dundee Wanderers join the league
Ireland
- The league turns professional!
- Ligoniel were excluded from the league (folded 1899)
- Ulster were excluded from the league, taking up rugby instead
Argentina
- Buenos Aires and Rosario Railway withdraw from the league
- Buenos Aires English High School withdraw from the league
- Quilmes withdraw from the league
- Rosario Athletic join the league
- Lobos AC join the league
- St. Andrew's rejoin the league, they last played in 1891, when they were champions
