Billy Franklin Smith, aged 94, peacefully passed to the Lord on July 7, 2024. His wife of nearly 74 years, Joyce Loftin Smith, was by his side at their home.
Billy was born on January 14th,1930, to Austin and Treva Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, and a grandson, Carlos Lopez IV. He leaves a living legacy through his four children, Billy Jr. (Barbara), Treva Osborne (Chuck), Julie Lopez (Carlos), and Suzie Weast (Paul). He was the proud grandfather of Amy, Scott, Greg, Mark, Stephanie, Erin, Lindsay, Lauren, and Carlos and the great-grandfather of 15 lovely young people. Special caregivers for the past 2 years, YaShima Reyes and Nettie Garland, also became like family members as they cared for Billy. He was greatly loved and will be missed by all of his family.
Billy was a lifelong baseball man. Over his 38-year career he played, managed, scouted, and coached professional baseball. He was associated with the Atlanta Braves, the Houston Astros, and the Toronto Blue Jays. His job allowed him and Joyce many opportunities as well as the privilege of meeting and making wonderful friends all over the country.
In his retirement Billy and Joyce enjoyed traveling, family, and the joy of lake life in the log cabin that he built at Lake Tillery. Bill's unwavering Christian faith, his strong work ethic, his honesty, and his dedication to God and family endeared him to everyone who knew him. -
