CBO Wildcard Round Results
NCA #6 Nordhagen Beach Party Boys vs #3 Salem Witch Hats
Game 1: Salem 1, Nordhagen Beach 0
Thirtysix, Salem Open WCR Strong with 1-0 Win
The Wildcard Round got off to a quiet start, with the host Salem Witch Hats taking a low-scoring, 1-0 win over the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys. Salem left-hander Jaa Thirtysix was marvelous at Vim! Park of Salem. The Witch Hats now hold a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 series.
Salem took advantage of an error in the bottom of the sixth inning. The game was tied, 0-0, when Jaheim Harper hit a run-scoring single that was misplayed. It put the Witch Hats in front, 1-0.
Salem manager Nick Caudill commended his team for exhibiting "no shortage of effort."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Vim! Park of Salem in Salem.
Game 2: Salem 5, Nordhagen Beach 2
Witch Hats Advance to Association Semifinal Round
After their 5-2 win today at Vim! Park of Salem over the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys, the Salem Witch Hats will advance to the Association Semifinal Round. Salem won the series by a 2-0 margin.
Leading the way for the Witch Hats was starting pitcher Pokey Chatman, who had a spectacular series and was named MVP.
"I don't play differently in the regular season or playoffs. I just go out and do my best every game," he said. "It's certainly nice to play in the big game, but you can't let it get to your head and change your focus."
The Salem Witch Hats will play against the County Crossing Bloodbugs in the next round. County Crossing had a bye in the Wildcard Round. The Association Semifinal Round schedule will be announced after the Wildcard Round finishes.
NCA #5 The Slog Ghouls vs #4 Bunker Hill 75ers
Game 1: The Slog 6, Bunker Hill 3
Road Win Lifts The Slog to 1-0 Lead in WCR
The The Slog Ghouls powered past the hometown Bunker Hill 75ers, 6-3, in the opener of the Wildcard Round at Battle of Bunker Hill Memorial Stadium. The Slog starting pitcher Flirt Perez threw 7.0 innings of 6-hit ball, to lead the charge. The Ghouls now lead the series 1-0.
The Slog used a well-timed hit by Silvam Fourteen to capture the win. The catcher socked a 2-run double in the top of the fifth inning to put the Ghouls ahead, 3-2. Though it was his only hit in 3 at-bats, it was important.
"Good baseball players make you a smarter manager," said The Slog manager Nate Pugh.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Battle of Bunker Hill Memorial Stadium in Boston.
Game 2: The Slog 6, Bunker Hill 3
Ghouls Win Wildcard Round
Many baseball pundits expected a close series in the North Charles Association Wildcard Round. It turned out quite a bit different.
The Slog Ghouls swept aside the Bunker Hill 75ers to advance to the Association Semifinal Round, winning the final game by a 6-3 score at Battle of Bunker Hill Memorial Stadium.
The series MVP was second baseman Rowdy Rodney Holt, who hit .444 with a .444 on-base percentage. He had 1 home runs, drove in 4 RBI and scored 3 runs.
"We expected this series to go right down to the wire, so to sweep is a bit of a surprise," he said. "But we'll take it."
The Slog Ghouls will play against the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud in the next round. Fort Hagen had a bye in the Wildcard Round. The Association Semifinal Round schedule will be announced after the Wildcard Round finishes.
SCA #6 University Point Deathclaws vs #3 Vault 81 Dwellers
Game 1: Vault 81 2, University Point 1
Wildcard Round Game 1 Victory for Summerset and Vault 81
The Wildcard Round got off to a quiet start, with the host Vault 81 Dwellers taking a low-scoring, 2-1 win over the University Point Deathclaws. Vault 81 right-hander Exxie Summerset was marvelous at CURIE Inc. Field. The Dwellers now hold a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 series.
Summerset tossed 104 pitches over 7 innings to clinch the win for the Dwellers. The right-hander allowed just 3 hits, while racking up 9 strikeouts in the game.
"We squandered some opportunities," said University Point manager Dirk Steadyhand.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at CURIE Inc. Field in Boston.
Game 2: Vault 81 6, University Point 4
Dwellers Cruise to Association Semifinal Round with Sweep
With a 6-4 win to wrap up the series at CURIE Inc. Field, the Vault 81 Dwellers have eliminated the University Point Deathclaws in the Wildcard Round and move on to the Association Semifinal Round.
Vault 81 controlled the series from the outset and won it in a 2-0 sweep.
Harry Byrd led the charge offensively for the victors, winning series MVP honors. He posted a .375 batting average, along with a .375 on-base percentage. He had 1 home runs, drove in 3 RBI and scored 2 runs.
"We're not done yet," the MVP said. "There is still a lot to accomplish."
The Vault 81 Dwellers will play against the Goodneighbor Hancocks in the next round. Goodneighbor had a bye in the Wildcard Round. The Association Semifinal Round schedule will be announced after the Wildcard Round finishes.
SCA #5 Jamaica Plain Red Rockets vs #4 Oberland T-51s
Game 1: Jamaica Plain 7, Oberland 5
Morgueman Blasts T-51s, Red Rockets Take Game 1, 7-5
With third baseman Tre' Morgueman leading the charge, the Jamaica Plain Red Rockets got a road win over the Oberland T-51s, 7-5, in Game 1 of the Wildcard Round. Morgueman was 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 doubles, while scoring 2 runs at Oberland Stadium to help Jamaica Plain take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 series.
Morgueman contributed in the top of the second. With a runner on 1st, he hit a double. It was one at-bat among others that helped Jamaica Plain get the win.
"We lost," Oberland manager Proper Lighthouse said later. "We'll deal with it. The series isn't over."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Oberland Stadium in Oberland.
Game 2: Jamaica Plain 7, Oberland 6
Red Rockets Heading to Association Semifinal Round
It's a sweet sweep for the Jamaica Plain Red Rockets and they have won the Wildcard Round. The Oberland T-51s were not able to keep pace with the Red Rockets and dropped the series in short order, losing, 7-6, in the deciding game.
"This wasn't really the effort we hoped for," said Oberland manager Proper Lighthouse.
It's now on to the Association Semifinal Round for Jamaica Plain after their 2-0 series win.
