There are plenty of FTP players in the Diamond tier
And usually more than 1 in the Perfect level.
Thy do some or all of:
Tournaments
Perfect Drafts
Twitch drops
Live card revaluation speculation
Hoarding packs for crucial time periods (like now)
Most of them understand the rhythm of the game. For example, many FTP players don't rush to complete the live missions, since they know that when June rolls around most teams will have enough irons and bronzes to complete the live missions, And for another example, once the regular MLB season ends, it's a really good idea to make sure that you have every live card in your inventory. It may seem stupid to you, but I guarantee that there were more than a handful of players who had the vast majority of the PT Elite missions completed instantly from their card inventories.
The best players understand how to use the sliders on the team and player strategy pages. They can beat you even when thy have 10% less talent than you do, because they maximize what they have,
I'm still in the learning phase, but a post on the forums inspired me to start a new team on Thursday evening the 21st. Because I do understand the card shop, I was able to complete all the live missions that first evening. And that left me with a team that was able to win about 85% of its games, often earning 3 or 4 thousand PP's in a blowout win. By the time Sunday evening rolled around, I have a very good team ready for this week's rookie leagues. That team is, as I write this, 126-1. And it's a lot better right now than it was on Monday morning.
Monday I was out sick, so I started another team. That team has had quite a bit of pack luck, but so far this week I have earned and opened over 700 packs, so the fact that I have multiple elite cards already is surprising but not crazily so. My starting rotation is Schilling (pulled from a pack), Bullet Joe Rogan (earned from missions), 101 Warren Spahn (bought to complete a mission; I had to sell most of the live Diamond toppers from the live missions to buy him), Frank Tanana (earned from missions) and 98 Adonis Terry (pulled from a pack). The team in the field is PTE Cal Raleigh, Will Clark, Artie Wilson (bought along the way to getting Rogan), Ray Dandridge (pulled from a HD pack earned by completing one of the missions for Rogan), Graig Nettles (bought). Ted Williams (BBref missions), 92 Rickey Henderson, PTE Tatis Jr. (pulled from a perfect pack), and DH Gary Sheffield.
Again, I spent no money on either of these teams. I'll have a better 1B than Clark by the end of the week, and I already own PTE Brenton Doyle, who I pulled from a HD pack. My OF for the rookie league next week will be Rickey in LF, Doyle in CF, and Williams in RF; my IF will be Dandridge at 3rd, Tatis Jr. at SS, Wilson at 2nd, and a 1B TBD, with Raleigh catching and Sheffield as the DH.
So even though the teams I've been playing since March ar stuck in gold, I have found a way to have fun with the game when a lot of players have given up.
