Game 117: Washington Senators vs. Boston Americans

What a game! A 19-inning, 5 hours and 6 minutes nailbiter that saw both starting pitchers toss 200+ pitches and post game scores among the best of the season. In the end, the Boston Americans (69-48) topped the Washington Senators (65-52) by a 4 to 3 score to the delight of the 8,937 fans in attendance. Boston now has a 4-game lead in the American League race.

While neither starting pitcher recorded a decision, both pitched outstanding. Sam Leever threw 215 pitches in 18 innings of play, allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 14 hits, 4 walks, and 1 wild pitch; Game Score 96. Oscar Jones (1-1) covered the final inning in a scoreless outing to pick up his first victory of the year. Not to be outdone in awesomeness, Rube Waddell threw 213-pitches in 16 innings of play, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 12 hits and 4 walks while striking out 10; Game Score 98. Carl Lundgren (3-5) (BS 1) was roughed up in his 2 1/3 innings of play in which he permitted 2 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits and 2 walks to take both the loss and blown save.

With a combined 31 hits on the day, there were several noteworthy hitting performances. For Boston, Solly Hofman (3 for 8, Triple, Run, RBI, Sacrifice Bunt), Chick Stahl (2 for 3, Double), Johnny Lush (2 for 3, RBI, Walk), and Bill Lange (2 for 6, 2 Runs, 3 Walks). The Senators were led by Kid Gleason (3 for 6, 2 Walks), Duff Cooley (2 for 8, Triple, 2 Runs), and Frank Bowerman (1 for 3, Double, Run).

Player of the Game: Sam Leever (Season: #15 / Career: #51)
