The June 1 Super Post

CBO Players of the Month

NCA Hitter - When guys like County Crossing's Babs Rooth win Batter of the Month awards, it just makes you feel good. In a productive May, the longtime North Charles Association veteran toyed with opposing pitchers, collecting 42 hits in 95 at-bats.

The veteran right fielder hit for a .442 batting average and collected 8 home runs, 26 RBIs and 25 runs scored.

On the year, Rooth is hitting .357 with 60 hits, 13 home runs, 44 RBIs, .468 OBP and has scored 36 runs.

SCA Hitter - To survive in the bigs, you've got to be a scrapper like Barker Cocoa. It never pays to take a day off from the batting cages or to shrug off the advice of the hitting coach. It all paid off today as University Point's first baseman pinned down the South Charles Association Batter of the Month trophy today.

He hit .333 in May collecting 8 home runs, 20 RBIs and 23 runs scored.

Cocoa on the season is hitting .315 with 13 home runs. His stats include 31 RBIs and 38 runs scored.

NCA Pitcher - The North Charles Association hitters didn't have a chance in May when the County Crossing Bloodbugs manager wrote "Ti" on the lineup card. Outing after outing, Shaak Ti held teams in check and usually got a win.

He excelled with a 5-1 mark and 2.98 ERA in 7 starts. The talented Bloodbugs star pitched 45.1 innings, fanned 38 and held opposing teams to a .214 average.

For his superb mound work Ti was named the NCA Pitcher of the Month by the baseball writers.

This season, Ti has registered 8 wins and 2 losses in 12 starts with a 3.67 ERA.

SCA Pitcher - Doug Creep really put his best foot forward in May with 5 wins and 1 loss and walked off with the Pitcher of the Month honors in the South Charles Association. When he got the start for the Atom Cats, it was good news for his club, but bad news for the opposition.

In 49.1 innings of work, Creep limited opposing batters to 46 base hits and a .257 batting average. He notched 34 strikeouts, issued 15 walks and had a 2.55 ERA.

In 13 starts this season, Creep has registered a 9-3 record and a 3.23 ERA.

NCA Rookie - Albie Cannibal's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Easy Town shortstop has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In May he was voted the Rookie of the Month.

During the month he hit .339 with 3 doubles, no triples and 10 home runs. Cannibal also scored 21 times and drove in 22 runs.

On the season, Cannibal is batting .323 with 10 home runs and 28 RBIs. He has played in 50 games.

SCA Rookie - He's only in his debut season, but Tiny de Grande performed more like a veteran on the hill for the Southie Brews and walked away with May's South Charles Association Rookie of the Month Award in the process.

Last month this young hurler recorded 6 wins and 1 loss in 0 starts. He threw 44.2 innings, giving up 28 walks, fanning 29 and compiling a 4.03 ERA.

His record this year is 6-4 in 0 starts and de Grande has a 5.26 ERA.

CBO Top Performers

Hitter - Concord's Duff Fee put on a show against University Point on May 28, racking up a 5 for 5 day with a double, two home runs, a stolen base, three runs, and six RBI. That gives Fee the season's top score of 113, tied with Glowing Sea's Naga Arakaki.

Pitcher - Despite there being a no-hitter in May, Matt Bowman of Nahant had the top pitching performance score of 86 to earn the top honor. On May 19, Bowman pitched a complete-game, two-hit shutout of Bunker Hill. He finished by allowing two hits, walking two, and striking out five. The 86 score ties D.P. Clark of Diamond City for the season's top score.

Despite his no-hitter, Cambridge's Mosie Corncob received a performance score of only 84. On May 10, Corncob pitched the Coursers to a 3-0 victory at Glowing Sea. Corncob walked seven and struck out four in the contest.

NEBL Analysis

The NEBL is now entering its third month of the season with all but one division tight. In the Yankee League's Mass Division, the Fall River Rippers have a seven-game lead over the Woburn Bobbleheads. In the Patriot League's Maine Division, the Everett Mutant Hounds also have a lead, theirs just three games thanks in part to a six-game winning streak.

The Patriot League's Vershire Division and the Yankee League's Connri Division are so tight that they're tied. In the Vershire, the Greenfield Disciples and Abernathy Adamantium are tied at 27-23. In the Connri Division, three teams are tied for 1st: the Worcester Cannons, Natick Big Leaguers, and Providence Warlocks. Only division winners make the postseason.

NEBL Players of the Month

PL Hitter - Knife Bowie battered Patriot League pitchers all May and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around New England Baseball League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 29-year-old Bowie told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 27 games, Bowie hit .348 with 9 home runs, 19 RBIs and scored 17 runs.

Bowie is batting at a .293 pace this season, picking up 48 hits in 164 at-bats with 12 home runs, 29 RBIs and 26 runs scored.

YL Hitter - Though his face is weathered and his hands are callused, Long Hall can still get it done in New England Baseball League. The 34-year-old right fielder for Brookline was named the Yankee League Batter of the Month today after putting up an impressive performance at the plate.

In May he batted .358 with 7 home runs, 11 RBIs and 24 runs scored.

Thus far this year, Hall is batting .300 with 10 home runs, 17 RBIs and 38 runs scored.

PL Pitcher - Old Glory Radcliffe will be bringing May's Patriot League Pitcher of the Month trophy home to Finch Farm. He excelled all month long as he kept opposing hitters guessing, reaching and hoping.

Radcliffe started 7 games, going 5-0 with 39 strikeouts in 48.1 innings as he compiled his 1.68 ERA.

For the year, Radcliffe has a 9-1 record with a 2.63 ERA in 12 starts.

YL Pitcher - Timmy Gilded of Natick had a tremendous May with a 5-0 mark and was chosen the Pitcher of the Month in the Yankee League.

Gilded restricted opposing hitters to 33 base hits and a .204 batting average. He rang up 38 strikeouts in 46.1 innings of work, surrendered 8 walks, and crafted a 1.94 ERA.

This year, Gilded has posted a record of 7 wins and 2 losses with a 2.83 ERA. He has appeared in 10 games and struck out 56 in 70 innings.

MML Analysis

The MML has no ties in any of its four divisions, but some of the division races are pretty tight at this point in the season. Division leaders are the Covenant Refractors (Boggs), Lawrence Revolution (Murtagh), Castle Strength (Williams), and Springfield Operators (Yastrzemski). The Strength have the smallest lead of just a game over the Hull Lead Bellies, while the Revolution have the largest lead of five games over the Sanctuary Hills Zetans.

MML Players of the Month

LL Hitter - Sanctuary Hills Zetans fans believe they've got a talented young star in Oldman Llewellyn.

He did nothing to dissuade that notion in May, as he hit .362 with 12 home runs, 26 RBIs and 24 runs scored.

The end result was the first baseman being named the Legends League Batter of the Month.

This year, Llewellyn is hitting .333 with 40 hits, 12 home runs, 27 RBIs and has scored 25 runs.

SL Hitter - Tony Bigfish may be much younger than other hitters in the Stars League, but he performed like a seasoned veteran in May to win the Batter of the Month award.

The 21-year-old Suffolk County right fielder hit .340 with 17 home runs, 34 RBIs and 29 runs scored.

So far this year, Bigfish is batting .317 with 25 home runs and 50 RBIs.

LL Pitcher - This month the Legends League spotlight fell on pitcher Callum Columba of the Revere Beach Shoremen.

What a May he had!

A fine 4-1 won-lost record, 2.32 ERA, 8 starts, 50.1 innings pitched and 43 strikeouts -- good enough to get him the LL Pitcher of the Month.

This season, Columba has worked 78 innings with 60 strikeouts en route to a 4-2 record and a 3.92 ERA.

SL Pitcher - Snoop Hound of Cranston had an award-winning May as he took home the Stars League Pitcher of the Month award.

"He told me once people used to make fun of the way he pitches," Hound's pitching coach told reporters. "There wasn't anybody laughing in May except for Snoop."

Hound was all business when he took the mound though, collecting a 5-1 record in 7 starts. He struck out 32 batters in 49.1 innings and kept opponents to a .218 batting average.

This year, Hound has compiled a 8-2 record with a 2.05 ERA.

BMU Analysis

The BMU is a tight league overall with almost all teams within 10 games of 1st place in their leagues. Current league leaders are the Med-Tek Eyebots (Dark Hollow Pond), Union Hope Lifegivers (Cambridge), West Roxbury Mole Rats (Downtown Boston), and Greater Mass Vans (Glowing Sea). The Lifegivers have just a game lead over the Rocky Narrows Blitz, as well as the Mole Rats over both the DB Tech Nuclear Physicists and Charles View Cannibals.

BMU Players of the Month

CA Hitter - When Newt Jordan stepped up to the plate in May he did it with confidence, and today he was honored with the Commonwealth Association Batter of the Month award.

The young Lynn Woods left fielder posted a .390 batting average with 15 home runs, 32 RBIs and scored 25 runs. Jordan also worked pitchers for 18 walks to post a .487 on-base percentage.

In 47 games Jordan is hitting .345 this season with 59 hits, 23 home runs, 51 RBIs, 26 walks, .437 OBP and has scored 40 runs.

MA Hitter - At only 20 years of age, Frigate Magdaleno could very well have many more months like this last one during his career.

That would be great news for fans of the CGP Demolitionists, as May was one to remember for the first baseman and he has captured the Massachusetts Association Batter of the Month award.

On the month he hit .388 with 11 home runs, 33 RBIs and 23 runs scored.

In his 2313 season totals, Magdaleno has 22 home runs, .370 BA, .448 OBP, 54 RBIs and 38 runs scored.

CA Pitcher - The Pitcher of the Month has been chosen and the Commonwealth Association trophy went to Lynn Woods hurler, Griz Balcacer.

During the month, Balcacer was impressive with a 1.81 ERA and 3 wins and no losses. In 44.2 innings he struck out 20 and gave up 33 hits and 13 walks.

This season, Balcacer has a 3-0 record with a 1.81 ERA.

MA Pitcher - Stacker Building of West Roxbury had an outstanding May with a 4-0 mark and was chosen the Pitcher of the Month in the Massachusetts Association.

He topped off the month with a 2.72 ERA in 7 starts, tossed 43 innings, fanned 38 and held opposing teams to a .225 average.

This season in 12 starts, Stacker Building has a record of 4-4 with 55 strikeouts in 64.1 innings and a 4.34 ERA.
