AMERICAN HAMMERS NEWARK; ALL-STARS FEAST
AMERICAN’S 1-4 BATSMEN COMBINE FOR 17 HITS; DAVIS & VERSTEGEN FINISH WITH 5 EACH
PHILADELPHIA (May 6, 1869) – Defending Coastal champions American opened the season with a disappointing home loss to Newark by the score of 11-9. They did plenty to make up for that on Thursday afternoon:
It was a spectacular day for the American offense, and in particular the four All-Stars that make up the first half of their order: 2B Peter Boyce, 1B William Busby, CF Willie Davis, & 3B Werner Verstegen. Together, the four did the following:• #1 Werner Verstegen (3B): 5/7 (all 1B), 3 R, 0 RBI, 2 SB
• #2 Peter Boyce (2B): 3/7 (all 1B), 3 R, 2 RBI
• #3 Willie Davis (CF): 5/5 (all 1B), 3 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB
• #4 William Busby (1B): 4/6, 1 2B, 3 R, 3 RBI
• 1-4 BATTERS TOTAL: 17/25, 1 2B, 12 R, 7 RBI, 2 SB, 1 BB The four players, who have fifteen All-Star Game appearances between them, struggled in yesterday’s opener but obviously had cured whatever was ailing them in time to play game number two.
In addition to the above, OF Frazer Daly was 3/3 with three runs scored and three driven in and C Greg Monroe was 3/6 with a pair of runs. It was an outstanding day for the American offense.
