Game 132: St. Louis Browns vs. Boston Americans
Another game in which Boston jumps out to an early lead only to see it drift away. Here, the visiting St. Louis Browns (65-67) got the best of the hometown Boston Americans (78-54) by a 5 to 1 score; much to the dismay of the 7,958 fans in attendance.
Tom Hughes (14-10) -- who was a trade target during the season -- topped the Americans by allowing just 1 earned run on 7 hits while striking out 4 in his 100-pitch outing; Game Score 73. Jesse Tannehill (15-17) was roughed up for 5 earned runs on 13 hits and 2 walks; Game Score 40.
This was a special day at the plate for Jimmy Barrett (3 for 4, Triple, 4 Runs, Walk), along with the support of teammates Bill Fallon (3 for 4, Double, Run, RBI), and Charlie Babb (2 for 5, Double, Stolen Base). Barrett tied a St. Louis team record with 4 runs in a regular season game. The Americans were led by Fred Clarke (2 for 4, Run), and Chick Stahl (1 for 4, Triple, RBI).
Player of the Game: Tom Hughes
