CBO All-Star Game
All-Star Spectacle Island Reapers' left fielder Hondo Ohnaka had a night to remember.
Not only did he take the field with the game's best players, he was also a huge factor in the 12-3 South Charles Association victory over the North Charles Association All-Stars.
"We had a meeting before the game, and I was struck by the talent in the room. Old stars, young stars, it's a game I'll never forget," Ohnaka said. "I talked to a few of my friends from back home, and they told me to go out and win the game for them. I'm sure they'll be thrilled."
Ohnaka has a lifetime .252 average and .339 on-base percentage in his career with 649 hits, 116 doubles, 14 triples, 181 home runs, 496 RBIs and 454 runs scored.
Fans who came to ArcJet Systems Stadium for the 2313 Home Run Challenge expected to see some drama. Drama they received. Family Sam Partridge, the Sunshine Tidings Chemists left fielder, ended up winning the contest, finally, after out-homering Packs Ton Kling in the final round by a score of 7-6.
"I had a lot of fun," said Partridge. "The fans seemed to have fun, too."
Partridge has a lifetime .312 batting average and .375 on-base percentage in his 716-game career with 838 hits and 193 home runs.
What's the best league? The North Charles Association or the South Charles Association? The answer will be found in the Commonwealth Baseball Organization All-Star Game. CBO Players of the Month
NCA Hitter - At only 23 years of age, Clean Jack Spratt could very well have many more months like this last one during his career.
That would be great news for fans of the Cambridge Coursers, as July was one to remember for the left fielder and he has captured the North Charles Association Batter of the Month award.
On the month he hit .485 with 8 home runs, 18 RBIs and 11 runs scored.
Spratt is currently hitting at a .321 pace with 28 home runs and 59 RBIs.
SCA Hitter - To survive in the bigs, you've got to be a scrapper like Barker Cocoa. It never pays to take a day off from the batting cages or to shrug off the advice of the hitting coach. It all paid off today as University Point's first baseman pinned down the South Charles Association Batter of the Month trophy today.
He hit .379 in July collecting 11 home runs, 30 RBIs and 24 runs scored.
This season in 95 games, Cocoa has hit at a .323 clip with 116 hits, 32 home runs, 77 RBIs and 82 runs scored.
NCA Pitcher - Sarthis Idren was on top of the world in July, capping it off with the North Charles Association Pitcher of the Month honors.
The Fort Hagen starter was superb in 6 starts with 5 wins and no losses, 43 innings pitched, 30 strikeouts and a fine 2.51 ERA.
His record this season is 14-5 in 25 starts and Idren has a 3.23 ERA.
SCA Pitcher - Doug Creep's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 4-1 in July, the 27-year-old Atom hurler has been named South Charles Association Pitcher of the Month.
He fanned 30 in 42.1 innings, logged an ERA of 2.55 and allowed opponents to hit .259 against him.
So far this season, Creep has a 17-6 record, 26 starts, 174 innings, 114 strikeouts and a 3.05 ERA.
NCA Rookie - Thatch Heard is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest North Charles Association Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.
In July the Salem hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .402 average with 37 hits, 4 home runs and 18 RBIs.
Heard is batting .352 this year with 21 home runs, 72 RBIs and 59 runs scored. He has 141 hits in 401 at-bats.
SCA Rookie - July was a very impressive month for Atom hurler, Lacky Luster. So impressive that the South Charles Association named him the league's best newcomer and awarded him the Rookie of the Month trophy.
Last month the 19-year-old starter recorded a solid record with 1 win and no losses and a 0.00 ERA as he struck out 5 in 9 innings and held opponents to a .138 batting average.
This year, Luster has collected 20 saves. In all he has made 44 relief appearances, thrown 48 innings, struck out 21 and walked 22. His record shows 3 wins and 2 losses with a 2.06 earned run average.
NEBL Analysis
The NEBL season is down to the final five games per team. Right now, the only division that is settled is the Mass Division with the Fall River Rippers 16 games up on 2nd-place Braintree. In the Maine Division, the Everett Mutant Hounds have a one-game lead over Clifton and a two-game lead over Finch Farm. The Shamrocks have won 11 straight. In the Vershire Division, the Abernathy Adamantium have a two-game lead over Graygarden and a four-game lead over Burlington. Finally, in the Connri Division, the Worcester Cannons have a one-game lead over the Providence Warlocks.
NEBL Players of the Month
PL Hitter - Finch Farm Shamrocks fans may just have witnessed a star player blossoming before their eyes in July.
Jeremiah Frogbull put up a remarkable month at the age of 23 and has been named the Patriot League Batter of the Month.
For the month, Frogbull hit .422 with 5 home runs, 25 RBIs and 20 runs scored.
Currently Frogbull is batting .366 with 8 home runs, 38 RBIs and 26 runs scored.
YL Hitter - Hey Dentra Venski has a lot going for him. The Warwick third baseman just broke into the majors this year and now the Yankee League has just picked him as its top hitter for July.
In 28 games last month this outstanding rookie batted .381 with 9 home runs, 19 RBIs and 21 runs scored.
This year, Venski is hitting .329 with 16 home runs and 31 RBIs in 53 games played. He also boasts an OBP of .372 with 12 walks and 31 runs scored.
PL Pitcher - An outstanding 4-1 record in July earned Jacen Syndulla the Pitcher of the Month Award in the Patriot League. When his name was penciled in to start on the Medford lineup card, it meant trouble for opposing teams.
In 54 innings of work, Syndulla limited opposing batters to 37 base hits and a .193 batting average. He notched 24 strikeouts, issued 13 walks and had a 2.00 ERA.
To date this season, Syndulla has registered 24 starts, 11-5 won-lost mark, 3.13 ERA, 158 IP, 69 strikeouts and 36 walks. Opposing teams have hit .232 against him.
YL Pitcher - It was a monstrous July for the Yankee League Pitcher of the Month award winner, Zane Blaze of the Fall River Rippers. He put up some mighty scary numbers.
Blaze recorded 5 wins and no losses in 7 starts. Throwing a total of 54.2 innings, he yielded 49 hits, mowed down 41 on strikes, gave up 17 walks and put up a solid ERA of 2.14 in a stellar month on the mound.
This year in 24 starts, Blaze has recorded 14 wins and absorbed 2 losses. He has pitched 180.2 innings, allowed 150 hits, struck out 140 and has a 2.04 ERA.
MML Analysis
The MML follows the same schedule as the NEBL, so there are also five games remaining on the 2313 season. Unlike the NEBL, three of the four divisions are already determined with just one more up for grabs. In the Boggs Division, the Covenant Refractors have clinched over Tenpines Bluff. In the Murtagh Division, the Lawrence Revolution have clinched over Sanctuary Hills. And in the Yastrzemski Division, the Newton Behemoths are winners over the Bridgeport Gulchers. The one race is sort of a race with the Hull Lead Bellies holding a four-game lead over Castle.
MML Players of the Month
LL Hitter - It's perhaps an award he'll win many more times through his career, as at age 20 Righty Tato has a lot of baseball ahead of him.
But for now the young Covenant Refractors star can enjoy the numbers he put up in July, which have garnered him the nod as the Legends League Batter of the Month.
His breakout month featured a .400 average with 17 home runs, 37 RBIs and 28 runs scored.
This year, Tato has collected a .314 batting average to date with 120 hits in 382 at-bats, 95 RBIs, 42 home runs and scored 82 times. He has played in 102 games.
SL Hitter - Tony Bigfish made his presence known as one of the best young stars in the Stars League this past month.
The Suffolk County Pink Goo right fielder shined through the month of July and has won the Batter of the Month award.
The 21-year-old hit .378 with 17 home runs, 33 RBIs and 30 runs scored.
For the season, Bigfish has hit .347 with 54 home runs and 112 RBIs. He has played in 96 games and scored 94 times.
LL Pitcher - Derek Satchell had an outstanding July -- so good that the Legends League presented him with the Pitcher of the Month Award earlier today.
"There's no way to know where the Bashers would be without Satchell," one fan is quoted as saying.
In July Satchell dominated the competition, running up a 5-1 record, a 2.41 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 56 innings.
So far this season, Satchell has a record of 7-2 with 87 strikeouts and 29 walks in 100 innings and a 3.15 ERA.
SL Pitcher - Last month was a very successful month for Richard Burns of Hull. So successful that he has been honored as the Pitcher of the Month in the Stars League.
Burns shut down league hitters in fine fashion, rounding out July with an impressive 5-0 mark and 2.92 ERA in 7 starts with 36 strikeouts in 49.1 innings.
In 27 starts this season, Burns has recorded 12 wins and absorbed 3 losses. He has pitched 163.1 innings, allowed 167 hits, struck out 99 and has a 4.46 ERA.
BMU Playoffs
The Mystic Pines Raybathers made quick work of the Greater Mass Vans in the Boston Minor Series, sweeping them aside to clinch the 3rd Boston Minor Union crown in Raybathers history.
Mystic Pines sealed the series today at William Knight Field with a 8-2 victory. During the regular season play, the Raybathers notched a 51-37 record and wound up in first place in the Commonwealth Association Cambridge League race.
"I won't say it was easy, because baseball games are rarely easy," said Mystic Pines manager Brandon Hampton. "But I did expect we would have to play a much longer series."
BMU Players of the Month
CA Hitter - For a rookie just breaking in, I.C. Reader certainly put together a successful month. It was good enough to win the CA Batter of the Month award for July.
The 18-year-old third baseman for the Lynn Woods Bloatflies hit .310 with 11 home runs, 20 RBIs and 18 runs scored.
MA Hitter - Not known for his offensive prowess, King Glover set the league afire in July and took home the Massachusetts Association Batter of the Month award.
The Scrap Palace center fielder posted a steady .421 batting average, 8 home runs, 18 RBIs and 19 runs.
Glover boasts a career batting average of .314 with 141 hits, 30 homers and 81 RBIs.
CA Pitcher - The top pitcher this past month in the Commonwealth Association was Jokum Thunmark of the Mystic Pines Raybathers. He really bewildered league hitters, finishing July with an excellent 2-0 record and 0.44 ERA.
The Raybathers hurler made 3 starts and surrendered 14 hits in 20.1 innings. He struck out 15 and walked 4.
During his career, Thunmark has compiled a 4-2 record with a 2.71 ERA in 13 starts.
MA Pitcher - The hottest hurler in the Massachusetts Association last month was E.Z. Living of the Westing Estate Alphas. He caught the attention of everybody in the league with some eye-catching stats, good enough to win the MA Pitcher of the Month.
In July, Living starred with an impressive 3-0 record. In 4 starts he gave up 11 base hits and struck out 21 in 23.1 innings with a 3.47 ERA.
Living has posted 7 victories and 3 defeats in his career with a 4.56 ERA.
GBRL Playoffs
The season came to a crashing halt for the Augusta Harpooners when the New Britain Oceanics beat them 10-6 today at Ballpark of Weare to sweep the Rookie Series 3-0.
Fans in New Britain have already begun the celebration, and officials are expecting huge numbers when the championship parade takes place in a few days.
"Unbelievable for us, for our fans," an elated Oceanics skipper Finley Baxter said. "This team has worked as hard as any team ever. They deserve it. What these guys have done, they're going to enjoy for a long time."
This was the 1st championship for the Oceanics.
After the game, Augusta manager Oscar Hopkins was asked by reporters what it's like to lose in the Rookie Series.
"You want the results to be different," he said. "They simply outplayed us, they deserve it. They beat us. They're the champions."
New Britain finished the season with a record of 74-14 and ranked first in the South League Southwest Division.
GBRL Players of the Month
NL Hitter - Bull Lozano is not used to being associated with Batter of the Month-caliber players, but today the Fiddler's Green right fielder joined that select company when the North League announced the results of July's voting.
Lozano totaled 21 hits, 12 walks, 4 home runs, 13 RBIs and 12 runs scored last month to put together a .438 batting average and .585 on-base percentage.
SL Hitter - Even though he is a newcomer to Greater Boston Rookie League, Clean Blake Dean put up some good numbers in July and earned the SL Batter of the Month award.
He was one of Woonsocket's offensive leaders with a .436 average in 15 games. He also racked up 8 home runs, 21 RBIs, and 19 runs scored.
In his 123-game career Dean has tagged 128 hits with 24 doubles, 4 triples and 43 home runs. His lifetime batting average is .359 with 101 RBIs and 92 runs scored.

Lifetime Towngirl has a 4-2 won-lost record and a 8.10 ERA with 6 saves. He has made 42 games, logged 60 innings and fanned 69 batters.
