News from the CBO, Minors, CCBL, and CYL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

18 August 2313

CBO Analysis

We are now just two weeks away from the conclusion of the 2313 season, and there is still action of interest to pay attention to as we head to the playoffs. Two teams, Vault 81 and Atom, are in the playoffs. Three teams--Easy Town, Malden, and Roxbury--are already eliminated. Every other team is still in the race. ------
7. Diamond City

9. Southie
10. Egret
------
11. Spectacle Island
12. Jamaica Plain
13. Goodneighbor

Brotherhood League

Unless County Crossing goes into a late-season slump, they should be in position to hold their 4.5-game lead over Salem. The Slog has been slumping, dropping them perhaps out of any home-field advantage in the Wildcard Round of the playoffs. Not only that, but Nahant and Nordhagen Beach are three and four games behind them, respectively in the hunt for the 5th seed. Both the Celtics and Party Boys are currently on the outside looking in.

A closer look at the Pennant Chase shows odds of where they five good teams will finish in the league and the association.

County Crossing- at Atom (3), vs Nahant (3), at Salem (3), at Nahant (2), at Malden (2)
Salem - at University Point (3), vs Easy Town (3), vs County Crossing (3), at Easy Town (2), vs The Slog (2)
The Slog - at Jamaica Plain (3), vs Malden (3), at Easy Town (3), at Malden (2), at Salem (2)
Nahant - at Quincy (3), at County Crossing (3), at Jamaica Plain (3), vs County Crossing (2), vs Nordhagen Beach (2)
Nordhagen Beach - at Southie (3), vs Oberland (3), vs Malden (3), at Lexington (2), at Nahant (2)

The Witch Hats have not established themselves as serious contenders for the title in a season that appears it could be a rematch between Fort Hagen and Vault 81. The Hats are 1st in the NCA in runs scored (655) and 5th in runs allowed (522). There are several stars on offense, but 1B Brian DeLong (.343/33/98) and rookie RF Thatch Heard (.360/25/89)stand out the most. On the mound, the first two starters, Paul Stains (13-8, 3.46) and Jaa Thirtysix (13-5, 3.58), can help the team win any game.

Institute League

Fort Hagen has control of the top seed by two games over the Bloodbugs and has full control over the IL with a nine-game lead over Lexington. While the Synths appear to have a hold on the playoffs, that hold is loose with the Celtics and Boys in the BL challenging to get in. Bunker Hill currently holds the 6th seed. The rest of the league is "alive" with Both Starlight and Concord seven games over .500 at the top of the alive teams. Sunshine Tidings is 13 games below .500, and Cambridge is solidly in the 12th slot in the NCA.

Looking at the Pennant Chase in the IL, we will consider Fort Hagen's position safe. Otherwise, this is the wildcard race final schedule.

Lexington - at Roxbury (3), vs Goodneighbor (3), vs Sunshine Tidings (3), vs Nordhagen Beach (2), at Fort Hagen (2)
Bunker Hill - at Diamond City (3), at Fort Hagen (3), vs Starlight (3), vs Fort Hagen (2), at Sunshine Tidings (2)

The Silver Shroud are the defending champions and appear as though they can and maybe should repeat in 2313. Currenty, the Shroud are 2nd in runs scored (638) and 1st in runs allowed (465). The two stars for Fort Hagen's offense are 2B Nauseous Revere (.343/15/69) and RF Orcin Cardinal (.300/31/100). On the mound, starters Sarthis Idren (16-6, 3.04) and Elastic Man Haley (16-5, 2.78) have been two of the best. Trade acquisitions, Nuke Laloosh (7-18, 4.83) and Clubhouse Treelover (8-9, 4.24) have better support but have struggled in 2313. However, the bullpen is now stacked with La'Ray Kalel (7-3, 4.05), Max Grove (17 SV, 4.05), and Nien Nunb (11 SV, 2.93).

Minutemen League

Atom has clinched a wildcard spot and has a Magic # of 2 with a 12-game lead over University Point. We admit that we expected the Cats to fall back to the pack as leaders of a weak league, but they have not done that all season, holding on to the CBO's third-best record behind Vault 81 and Fort Hagen. University Point is the only other team above .500 and should be in the playoffs. Quincy and Southie are still serious competitors to sneak into the playoffs despite being below .500. Spectacle Island, Jamaica Plain, and Goodneighbor are technically still alive but not really.

In the ML, the Pennant Chase looks like this:
University Point - vs Salem (3), at Jamaica Plain (3), at Southie (3), vs Jamaica Plain (2), at Atom (2)
Quincy - vs Nahant (3), at Southie (3), vs Spectacle Island (3), vs Southie (2), at Egret (2)
Southie - vs Nordhagen Beach (3), vs Quincy (3), vs University Point (3), at Quincy (2), at Spectacle Island (2)

The Deathclaws are going to be in the playoffs yet again. However, they live and die based on the effectiveness of their offense. The Claws are 3rd in runs scored (634) and 9th in runs allowed (595). Four guys have 20+ home runs: 1B Barker Cocoa (.328/37/92), CF Sack King (.272/35/91), RF Wee Willy Warrington (.287/28/71), and SS Rock Rampage (.316/21/81). Pitching has four legends as starters, though none are great anymore. Acquisition Digger Vadim (9-8, 4.30) leads the charge with Tony Bertha (10-8, 4.03) having the best ERA. CL Matt Hoernig (25 SV, 3.62) is decent.

Railroad League

Vault 81 plays in what seems to be a decently good league, but there are only three total teams above .500. The Dwellers have an 11-game lead, meaning they are just 2 or 3 games away from clinching over FHE. Glowing Sea is still a great story, and it looks more likely that they will be there in the playoffs with the current 6th seed, Oberland, seven games back of them. The T-51s and Diamond City are tied. With Oberland's bad streak of injuries, including losing star SS Stormin Normin MacDonald for the season, they are on the way down. The Swatters are the CBO's hottest team at 9-1 in their last 10, and Egret has been much better as of late. The Rad Sox are officially on watch for the draft's 3rd-overall pick.

The Pennant Chase seems to start at 3rd place, but let's take a look at every significant race.
FHE - vs Cambridge (3), vs Glowing Sea (3), vs Fort Hagen (3), at Glowing Sea (2), vs Oberland (2)
Glowing Sea - vs Starlight (3), at FHE (3), at Roxbury (3), vs FHE (2), at Diamond City (2)
Oberland - vs Concord (3), at Nordhagen Beach (3), vs Diamond City (3), vs Goodneighbor (2), at FHE (2)
Diamond City - vs Bunker Hill (3), at Vault 81 (3), at Oberland (3), vs Vault 81 (2), vs Glowing Sea (2)
Egret - vs Fort Hagen (3), at Roxbury (3), at Vault 81 (3), vs Roxbury (2), vs Quincy (2)

For the Radscorpions, first, welcome to the playoffs, assuming they do not have an epic collapse in the last two weeks. Glowing Sea is 4th in runs scored (631) and 5th in runs allowed (559) thanks to having the best Bullpen ERA (4.12). There is only one offensive star, RF Naga Arakaki (.332/33/114), who is in contention to steal the Nuka Hitter Award from Cocoa. CF Enigma Montgomery (.318/15/64/38 SB) has been the second-best contributor. Despite not having a great Starters ERA (11th at 5.10), those skewed numbers are because of the 4th starter, not the top three. Those starters have been good: Cutter Redman (15-6, 3.47), Ryan Dennislynch (17-3, 3.87), and Tony Vampire Frazier (10-5, 3.93). Redman was acquired from The Slog, making the Radscorpions a tough team. CL Pink Floyd (24 SV, 3.46) is the bullpen leader.

CBO Standings

CBO Players of the Week

August 4 - Veteran Babs Rooth had a great week at the plate for the Bloodbugs to capture the majority of votes for Player of the Week in the North Charles Association.

The 34-year-old County Crossing right fielder built a .474 average on the strength of 9 hits in 19 at-bats, 5 home runs and 12 RBIs.

Thus far this year, Rooth has hit .360 with 29 home runs and 92 RBIs.

Fairlane Ford has the tools to stick in this league for many years. The 21-year-old second baseman of the Southie Brews had a hot bat in the South Charles Association over the past seven days and won the Player of the Week honors.

Ford batted .529 with 9 hits in 17 at-bats, 2 home runs and 5 RBIs.

This season, Ford has delivered 122 hits in 387 at-bats for a .315 average with 23 home runs. He is getting on base at a .404 clip and his totals also include 79 RBIs and 70 runs scored. This year Ford has played in 103 games.

August 11 - County Crossing Bloodbugs first baseman Plain Morris walked away with the North Charles Association Player of the Week Award today after putting up some impressive numbers over the past seven days.

"The Bloodbugs fans are really behind me right now," said the 27-year-old. "That helps. They give you the confidence to go out there and do better."

Morris batted .478 (11-for-23) with 2 home runs and 6 RBIs this week on his way to the award.

This season, Morris is batting .304 with 61 RBIs, 48 runs scored and 21 home runs.

The South Charles Association has made it official -- Rock Rampage is this week's winner of the Player of the Week Award.

The University Point shortstop was sensational with a .481 batting average, 4 home runs and 9 RBIs. Rampage also had no walks and posted a .481 on-base percentage.

Rampage is batting .317 this season in 108 games with 20 home runs, 77 RBIs and 61 runs scored. He has 138 hits in 435 at-bats.

August 18 - It's always a thrill for fans of the team and students of the game alike when a superstar in the making shows what he's got. Breha Queen, the Malden Grognaks 25-year-old second baseman, put himself in the spotlight last week making him the clear-cut choice for North Charles Association Player of the Week honors.

He ripped 11 hits in 22 at-bats, compiling a .500 average with 3 home runs and 6 RBIs.

So far this season, Queen has gotten 109 hits in 415 at-bats for a .263 batting average with 8 home runs. His stats include 33 RBIs and 60 runs scored. He has played in 112 games.

His hard work and hustle paid off this week. The hard-working and hard-playing Mork Mendee was rewarded with the South Charles Association Player of the Week honors.

The scrappy Southie Brews right fielder hit .538 while collecting 14 hits in 26 at-bats, 3 home runs and 9 RBIs.

To date, Mendee has collected 115 hits for a .315 average. He has posted 16 home runs, scored 67 runs and driven in 65 runs.

CBO Noteworthy News

August 2 - Joe Rathmann, welcome to the club -- the 2000-hit club.

The Vault 81 right fielder gained membership in that elite group in a 5-4 victory over the Spectacle Island Reapers at CURIE Inc. Field.

2 hits in 5 at-bats today enabled the Dwellers star to reach the milestone.

Rathmann has a lifetime average of .301, has played in 1794 games, and has collected 342 home runs and 1058 RBIs.

August 4 - So, who leads the Commonwealth Baseball Organization in isolated power (ISO)?

Brian DeLong, SAL, .341
Barker Cocoa, UP, .337
Babs Rooth, CC, .320
Clean Jack Spratt, CAM, .311

August 9 - It was a special day at Beantown Brewery Stadium for County Crossing's Gavin Eviritts. The Bloodbugs ace logged his 200th career win against the Party Boys. In the 11-2 decision Eviritts tossed 6.1 innings, surrendered 6 hits with no walks and 5 strikeouts.

"I'm real fortunate that I had the opportunity to play with such good players during my career," said Eviritts. "I just couldn't have drawn it up any better. I'm glad I did it in this uniform, too. County Crossing is a great organization to play for."

Lifetime Eviritts has compiled a 200-149 record with a 4.03 ERA in 463 starts.

August 9 - What a day for Babs Rooth. The 34-year-old County Crossing right fielder reached the 2000-hit mark today and the Bloodbugs whipped the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys 11-2.

Rooth told reporters, "It's good to finally get it. The closer you get to 2000, the harder it is to get there. Now the pressure is off and I can go back to just playing ball."

He went 2 for 5 in the game to reach the milestone.

Lifetime Rooth has played in 1560 games, batted .338 with 469 home runs and 2001 base hits.

Beachboy Nut, NB, 1.15
Chet Arthur, -, 1.16
Sheng Kawolski, ST, 1.17
Heaven Fontenot, DC, 1.20

August 17 - What a CBO premier! It was a good day for the Roxbury Rad Sox and an exceptional one for Rodney Caribou. The 21-year-old third baseman sent three bombs out of the park to help the Rad Sox beat the County Crossing Bloodbugs, 11-5, at Atomatoys Stadium at Roxbury.

"When you're in the zone, the game really slows down," Caribou said when asked about his performance later. "I couldn't even tell you what pitches were thrown. Today feels great, but it is a long season and tomorrow is another day."

Caribou was called up to the Rad Sox team after completing a season with the Revere Beach Shoremen of the MML (AA) with a .326/41/94 season. He is in contention to win the MML's top hitter award.

For the day, he scored 3 times, drove in 3 runs and smacked 3 hits in 4 at-bats.

Rodney Caribou flied out in the 2nd, hit a solo-shot off Gavin Eviritts in the 5th, hit a solo-shot off David Bridges in the 6th, hit a solo-shot off Mike Koenig in the 7th and walked in the 8th.

CBO Draft Preview

With the 2313 rookie draft only 90 days away, teams across Commonwealth Baseball Organization are preparing their scouting missions, trying to assess their long-term needs and hoping that they land the prospect that will positively define their club for the next few years. Most of the young men in the draft pool will have gone as far as they can go, but then, a few will surprise and pan out as quality -- or even great -- professional ballplayers. As of now, a complete shift of power has finally taken place with the college players dominating the projected top ten prospects.

MML Playoffs

It was a hard-fought battle for both teams to make it this far. But as the saying goes, "to the victors go the spoils." For the victorious Newton Behemoths, that meant the Massachusetts Minor League Massachussetts Minor Series trophy.

The Behemoths took a 9-5 victory over the Covenant Refractors at Synth Sympathy Center Field, winning their 1st championship after taking the series 3-1.

"We've got grit," said Behemoths left fielder Sardar Agiashvili, who was named MVP of the series. "We know how to win when we have to."

The new titleholders completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the Stars League Carl Yastrzemski Division and a 65-43 record.
