MLB Standings

The Mariners (80-53) and the Yankees (76-57) continue to dominate the American League while the Central is turning into a division with the Royals (69-64) equal with the Tigers (69-64), and trailing the White Sox (71-62) by two games. They will need to sweep a 3-game home series against the Tigers to claim the tiebreaker but have already secured the tiebreaker over the White Sox.

In the National League, the Padres (79-55) have the second best record in baseball, while the Marlins (74-58) are comfortable in the East. The Central is, again, where the action is with the Cubs (73-60) and the Cardinals (71-61) battling it out with the Reds (70-64) ready to pounce if both teams slip up.

The Rangers (73-59) and the Blue Jays (73-61) both took big steps towards the post season in August and are now 4.5 and 3.5 games up in the standings. The final AL Wild Card will likely come from the Central, with that home series against the Tigers looking critical for the Royals in September.

It is much tighter in the National Leagues where there are five games separating 5 teams and it is anyone’s guess who will take the three spots, although the Cardinals (71-61) are best placed at this point, four games up on the Pirates (67-65).

Kansas City Results

The Royals are finally trending in the right direction, with a 16-11 month being their best of the season so far (.592).

The month started with the completion of the sweep over the Cubs, before the teams shared a charter back to the Windy City so the Royals could take two of three from the White Sox. A 2-2 split, also on the road, against the Tigers followed, before coming home and dropping a home series 1-2 to the Red Sox.

A split two-game series at home to St Louis was followed by a sweep of the Twins in Minnesota, including a doubleheader, before winning two of three in Cincinnati. The Royals cam crashing back to earth getting swept at home by the woeful Angels, but responded well to win a home series against the Phillies and ending the month winning the first two games of a three game series against the Guardians.

While the bats cooled, the bullpen stepped up in this productive month for the Royals. Still leading the American League in batting average, hits, and extra-base hits is a good place to be, although the runs scored dropped again to 7th (649). The bullpen ERA has shot up to top the American League (3.89), while there are several top three statistics now which bodes well for the final full month of the regular season.

Bobby Witt Jr. (148 wRC+) carried the offence over the month, a .934 OPS with 4 HRs and 7 SBs. Danny Petty (66 wRC+) struggled, although he is providing elite defence at 3B to support the pitching staff.

On the pitching side, Mason Barnett (263 ERA+) and Cade Townsend (121 ERA+) both had strong months and the Royals hope that Chase Dollander (80 ERA+) is just adjusting to his new surroundings. Eric Cook (382 ERA+) came back up to the big leagues and brought his AAA performances with him, while Mason Fluharty (150 ERA+) provided strong relief throughout the month. The Royals are only lacking a reliable closer as none of Baquerizo, Bogans, or Hoffer managed a save rate above 70%.

A quieter month in August although a few injuries have caused challenges for the management. Eric Cook got another chance due to J.J. Paniagua’s injury, with Aiden May moving back into the starting rotation. Edgar Rivera (2026 Discovery) earned his first call up when Cerda got injured. The big loss was Edgar Manzo who will miss the rest of the season; with Jimmy Goodman back from his injury that means Ed Stevens will get a few more chances over the last month of the season.
