MLB Standings
The Royals will not manage four-in-a-row as the White Sox have clinched the AL Central. They will be joined in the American League as Division winners by the Mariners, who are on pace to win 100+ games this season, and either the Yankees or the Blue Jays.
Over in the National League, the Marlins have clinched the East, while the Cubs need one win or a Brewers loss to clinch the Central, and the West is a shootout between the 90-69 Padres and Dodgers.
The American League Wild Card picture is a lot clearer with the Blue Jays needing only one win to at least lock up one spot and the Rangers well placed to gain the second. The surging Red Sox (10-0 streak) have edged ahead of the Royals, whose destiny is no longer in their own hands. They do not hold tiebreakers over either the Red Sox or the Tigers so have to sweep their final series (at home to Atlanta, 57-102) and hope that Boston drops a game (at Tampa Bay, 66-93).
Over in the National League, it is a free for all with only four teams eliminated and three games to play. The Padres or Dodgers have one place locked in and the Brewers need only one more win but the final place likely won’t be decided until the final day of the season with tiebreakers most certainly in play!
Kansas City Results
Another frustrating month for the Royals as they go 13-13 and miss the opportunity to challenge for the Divisional pennant or even solidify their Playoff spot.
To start the month they were unable to complete the sweep of the Guardians and then despite taking the first two games could only split a four-game series against the Astros on the road. Coming home for two divisional series saw them drop the first game to the Guardians but then win their next five games to win that series 2-1 and then sweep the Twins 3-. The good time continued in a 2-1 road win over the Yankees before dropping two of three on the road in an interleague series in Pittsburgh. They came home to win their final divisional series 2-1 against Detroit, although failing to sweep meant they lost the tiebreaker. The penultimate final home interleague series went very badly; after a tough 9-10 12 inning loss in game one, the Royals failed to score a run in the next two games to be swept by the Giants. The month ended on the road in Washington where despite winning the first game, they dropped the series.
Kansas City Team Statistics
The Royals continue to underperform their metrics with a record 6 games under their Pythagorean record (88-71). This is reflected in strong statistical performance across the batting spectrum, with only Home Runs (10th), Walks (13th), and (critically) runs scored (7th) outside of the top 3 in the American League. The bullpen has turned their season around since the All Star Break and posts the best ERA (3.70) in the American League, leading to a host of top three categories. The defence has remained a weakness this year, a reflection of the Royals giving some more exciting bats a chance, as well as the regression defensively of Bobby Witt Jr.
Danny Petty (163 wRC+) rebounded in September, hitting for a .967 OPS while maintaining elite defence while
Jeremy Rogerson (145 wRC+) needs two HRs in the final three games for a 30-100 season!
Chase Dollander (119 ERA+) has improved from his August numbers while
Danny Petty (97 ERA+) picked up some starts for the first time in his career. In the bullpen,
Eddie Baquerizo (999 ERA+) didn’t give up an earned run over 8.2 innings while
Mason Fluharty (127 ERA+) struck out almost a third of batter he faced over 15 innings.

The Royals make two major moves on September 1st, in addition to the roster expansion additions of RP David Hagaman and 2B Tim Storer (coming back from rehab). They sacrificed some defence for bat in sending Ed Nicholson down to Omaha and calling up Dan Colligan while Juan Zubia was not getting enough ABs or results so was given the final month of the season in AAA to improve allowing Luis Zesati to return to the big leagues after a solid season in Omaha.
