June 30-July 1, 2038: at NY Yankees (2)
The Rays remained in first place by 1 1/2 games after their 2-game set with New York by getting a split, but they should have pulled off the sweep.
The offense propelled the Rays to an 8-5 win over the Yankees in the opener. Danny Arroyave was the main man, going 3-5 with 3 RBI, including a 2-run homer (#16) in the 4th, and Tony Fisher slammed a solo blast (#23) for insurance in the 7th and added a sac fly. Gabe Bryant (3-3) went 7 7 4 4 0 7 for the win and Tony Alicea got all 3 outs in the 9th via the whiff for his 21st save.
Homers from Jeremy Begley (#18), Tony Fisher (#24) and Danny Charlton (#14) helped the Rays to stake a 5-2 lead in the 6th in the second game, but Joe Marlette and the bullpen could not hold it and the Yankees came back to salvage a split with a 7-5 decision. Marlette didn't have his best stuff today but left ahead 5-3 before Moises Baca gave up a couple of hits to allow New York to even things in the 6th, leaving Marlette with a 5.2 8 4 4 2 3 line. And then in the 7th Branden Gammage (3-2) served up a 2-run homer to lose it.
Team record: 48-32. Next up: Back home for 3 against Baltimore.
