Amateur Liga de Verano flunks! Schism in Mexican baseball!
May 20, 1925 - México, Federal District - Written by Fray Nano
Not a month has gone by since the promised "mixed" league failed, and the schism between both Associations of Mexican baseball has grown bigger, possibly even beyond repair. Following the controversies in early April, when murmurs started circulating about how umpires would favor some teams, all members of the league committee resigned, essentially dissolving the league. In the weeks since, only loose games, with players vying for a pool of money, had been played. The Liga de Verano was announced earlier this month, but only lasted a few weeks.
The supposedly amateur league has dissolved due to the large droves of players, particularly Cubans, who switch team at will whenever they're offered more money. Where once the presence of Cuban players was a necessity for the advancement of the game in Mexico, today there is a necessity to cull their dishonorable behavior. As they only come here for the money, they have been found guilty of signing multiple contracts, and jumping from one team to another when convenient for them.
In other news, this "schismatic" league has caused irreparable damage to the relationship between Mr. Carmona and Mr. Rodríguez. While Rodríguez finds himself beleaguered, Carmona once again emerges as a bastion of the sport, poised to navigate through the turmoil and restore dignity to the Mexican game. "It's truly a shame what happened to the Mexican Association league," said Carmona, "but it is difficult to feel bad when they went behind our backs to have it in play in the first place. You will find us at the Federal District Association to be more careful. We have already held several meetings with owners of clubs whose names I will not disclose at this time, and they have been marvelous. Mr. Aguilar and myself will make more announcements in the coming weeks regarding a better organized and more competitive league."
