Expos Sent Estrada, Flores to San Francisco
stadiumreport.bbn June 7th, 2021
Proving the old adage that one man's trash is another man's treasure, the
Expos announced today the acquisition of 23-year old minor league 1B
Matt Talbert(2/3* HS, 1.5/2.5* OSA) from the
San Francisco Red Devils. Drafted in the second round in 2019, the college senior has struggled to adapt to professional baseball but improved to hit .275-3-7 .851OPS in A ball in 11 games.
Going back to
San Francisco will be 26-year old minor league 2B
Victor Estrada(2.5*) and 29-year old minor league 1B
Alfonso Flores(2*). "This isn't the deal of the century," acknowledged the
Expos, "but we think it will improve the direction of both teams."
With this deal, the
Montreal Expos close the chapter
Alfonso Flores for good after 12 years. Signed as a international amateur free agent,
Flores was an All-Star in 2017 and was part of the 2015 World Series winning season. For his career, he has hit .245/.297/.455 165HR 502RBI 391R in 821games, good for a total of 1.6WAR. He is due $8.9M this year and next year.
With
Victor Estrada, the
Montreal Expos lose a player that contributed to 0.9WAR at the major league level last season, but wasn’t able to break through into the opening day roster due to their increased focus on defense. He hit .204-3-15 .619OPS in 48 games in AAA this season.

We created ourselves quite a logjam of first baseman and infielders in the higher minors and trading Victor Estrada was a little try solve that problem. Talbert came up in talks, and with Dave G. rating his power potential at 65 compared to 55 from the OSA, we decided this could be the deal. Make no mistake, Talbert will be 24 in August and juuust played his first games above rookie ball… he may just be a bust.
The shock in my eyes when they were willing to accept Flores in that deal must’ve been real. Thank you guys tho, we happily unload the salary to you.
