July 7-9, 2056: at Baltimore (3)

Game 1: The acid test for the new-look Rays came in the opener of their showdown series in Baltimore and they passed the first exam with flying colors, taking a taut 4-1 win over the Orioles to move 1 1/2 games ahead in the division. And it was Jorge Barraza again succeeding with the new-look D behind him, going to 6-3 as a Ray after an excellent 7.1 6 1 1 1 8 outing with Mario Berumen getting a 1-2-3 9th for save #15. And the big blow came courtesy of one of the new guys with rookie Henry Rodriguez belting a 2-run homer (#2) in the 6th to break a 1-1 tie. The other two Rays runs came on solo shots from a resurgent Jesus Avalos, giving him 22 on the year.

Game 2: Dave Rose was dominant as Tampa Bay once again rode pitching and defense to a 3-1 over Baltimore, assuring a series win. Rose (9-4) took a 5-hit shutout into the 9th before allowing a homer and a triple and giving way to Mario Berumen for the save (#16). Rose finished 8 7 1 1 0 7 in one of his typically excellent performances. Paul Mayes' 2-run triple in the 2nd was the key hit as the Rays made it 8 straight wins since their mini-makeover.

Game 3: The Tampa Bay 8-game win streak crashed and burned in the finale as the Orioles routed the Rays 9-1. They jumped all over Randy Mastropietro (5-2), scoring 5 off him in the first two innings and leaving him with a 4 8 5 5 1 5 line. Meanwhile the bats couldn't get anything going, only avoiding a shutout thanks to Angel Gonzales' solo homer (#4) in the 8th.

Team record: 56-34. We now hit the All-Star break and when we return it'll be for 4 games against the Yankees at Publix Park.
