BNN Report

News from the CBO, Minors, CCBL, and CYL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

15 June 2314

CBO Analysis

We are not quite at the midway point of the season since we are 10 weeks into a 21-week season. But this is the midway point update, meaning our annual foray into the contenders vs pretenders. With nearly 65 games played in the 130-game regular season, only two teams--The Slog and Vault 81--have reached the 40-win mark, with two teams--Sunshine Tidings and Starlight--being the only teams with 40+ losses. We will break down the Power Rankings and the current Playoff Order below.

Here are the current team power rankings for Commonwealth Baseball Organization:

Teams (Total Points, Tendency):
1) Vault 81 Dwellers (131.9, +)
2) The Slog Ghouls (127.9, -)
3) Fort Hagen Silver Shroud (117.5, -)
4) FHE Yao Guai (114.7, +)
5) Diamond City Swatters (104.1, ++)
6) Concord Radstags (102.8, ++)
7) Bunker Hill 75ers (102.1, ++)
8) Oberland T-51s (101.1, ++)
9) Quincy Gunners (99.8, --)
10) University Point Deathclaws (97.8, --)
11) Cambridge Coursers (97.1, --)
12) Atom Cats (96.2, --)
13) Glowing Sea Radscorpions (96.1, o)
14) Lexington Synths (94.2, o)
15) Nordhagen Beach Party Boys (88.7, o)
16) Egret Ninjas (83.3, ++)
17) Southie Brews (83.2, +)
18) Roxbury Rad Sox (82.2, -)
19) Malden Grognaks (80.9, ++)
20) Salem Witch Hats (80.8, -)
21) Easy Town Assaultrons (78.8, --)
22) County Crossing Bloodbugs (74.4, ++)
23) Spectacle Island Reapers (70.5, -)
24) Sunshine Tidings Chemists (66.7, ++)
25) Jamaica Plain Red Rockets (66.5, -)
26) Starlight Killers (63.8, +)
27) Goodneighbor Hancocks (61.6, --)
28) Nahant Celtics (58.6, -)

Current Playoff Order:

NCA
1. The Slog
2. Fort Hagen
3. Concord
4. Bunker Hill (3-2 record vs Cambridge)
5. Cambridge (2-3 record vs Bunker Hill)
6. Lexington

Unless something really goes right for other team--Nordhagen Beach is the 7th seed, four games back of the Synths--or awry for teams seeded, this will be the six playoff teams with maybe some jostling of order. The Coursers of all teams just made a blockbuster trade, which we will cover in the league updates below.

SCA
1. Vault 81
2. Quincy (4-1 record vs University Point)
3. FHE
4. University Point (1-4 record vs Quincy)
5. Diamond City (6-4 combined record over Glowing Sea and Oberland)
6. Oberland (4-4 combined record over Diamond City and Glowing Sea)

The SCA playoff race appears that it will be a good one with the Radscorpions currently the odd team out for three teams tied at seven games above .500. Atom has also started to make its move at just a game back of the wildcard spot. That puts eight teams legitimately in the playoff race and six teams needing to do something different to get into it. It is likely, though, that the eight teams currently in the race will be the top eight seeds in the end.

Brotherhood League

The Slog's lead continues to grow, now up 13.5 games on 2nd place Nordhagen Beach. Salem, Easy Town, and Malden are all right on the Party Boys' tails with County Crossing and Nahant taking up the rear.

In the BL, really the Ghouls are the only contending team. The rest of the league has been inconsistent, though all of places 2nd-6th have been hovering around .500 in their last 10, pushing them all up from where they were 10 games ago. The Celtics have struggled mightily and trading away their ace Zach Million in the offseason now leaves them with a huge pitching gap that they have not been able to overcome in 2314.

The Boys are back? Well, they are looking much better, which begs a second question. Why did they trade away their best player over the weekend? Cambridge and Nordhagen Beach came to a huge deal that sent C Clownie Blammo (.279/6/31) to the Coursers for outstanding CF prospect Miky Mytook, and prospects 2B Packy Dillan and RF Gram Baylor. Nordhagen Beach, which is 9th in runs scored (309) is now without one of its best offensive threats and a great defensive catcher. The Party Boys do still have 1B Slammin' Sammy Holloway (.357/16/59) and RF Mork Mendee (.294/15/47) in the middle. But will they be enough? Nordhagen Beach is 5th in runs allowed (294), which keeps them in the playoff hunt for now. Ace SP Beachboy Nut (6-3, 3.64) still is the team leader with Deedee Martinson (5-5, 3.64) who appears in the Noteworthy News section helping. CL Yank Daley (17 SV, 3.60) has been decent but not dominant.

Institute League

Just last week, the top five teams were all within a game of 1st place. Since then, there has been some separation with the hot Fort Hagen Silver Shroud taking over first place. They are now two games up on 2nd place Concord. Bunker Hill and Cambridge are tied for 3rd with Lexington at 5th. Easy breakdown of contenders (the five named above) to the CBO's two worst teams and IL's current punching bags, Sunshine Tidings and Starlight. The Killers are actually on a three-game winning streak to place them back near the pack for the race to the CBO's #1 overall draft pick.

The Shroud have flexed their muscles and seem to be back to their winning ways. Their 8-2 mark in the past 10 ties FHE for the CBO's best run in the last 10 games. Offense has not been Fort Hagen's strength, currently 8th in runs scored, partially because of the 11th-ranked batting average (.265). Only C Sleve McDichael (.353/11/42) is above .300 right now for those eligible with enough at-bats. 1B Nick Coulter (.342/7/14) has been good in limited action. On the mound, the Silver Shroud are 2nd in runs allowed (265), with the 4th-best Starters ERA (3.89) and 2nd Bullpen ERA (4.52). The three top starters all have ERAs below 4.00: Nuke laloosh (5-4, 3.58), Sarthis Idren (6-5, 3.65), and Clubhouse Treelover (5-3, 3.24). CL Crazylegs Jones (18 SV, 3.13) has been about average.

Minutemen League

No team is "hot" in the ML with Atom having the best ten-game stretch of 6-4. They are currently on a three-game losing streak, including two right now to the Shroud. Quincy and University Point, both 4-6 in their last 10 are tied for 1st place with the Cats two back. Southie has faded away, now four games below .500. True pretenders are all of Spectacle Island, Jamaica Plain, and Goodneighbor.

The Hancocks keep stewing in mediocrity and may need to take a good look at what their overly large ballpark is doing to their team success. With the deepest center field (430 feet) in the CBO, power hitters are not going to find success, including Goodneighbor's CBO-worst 50 home runs, many of which have come on the road. The Hancocks are 13th in runs scored (267), though, which should not be the case with a deep park. Perhaps talent is the problem, especially since they have shipped off a lot of good, young talent in recent years. The best all-around hitter has been RF jay gabby (.286/12/44), which is not saying much. CF Gnaw Lynns (.331/4/21/13 SB) is the only hitter above .300. Third-starter Jared Porch (3-7, 3.88) has been pitching decently well but gets no run support for the team 8th in runs allowed (308). Sticky Hill (1 SV, 3.32) has taken over as closer from Midnight Flowers (14 SV, 5.01).

Railroad League

Vault 81 continues to be steady good and leads by six games over the hot Yao Guai. All of Diamond City, Oberland, and Glowing Sea are tied for 3rd, two back of FHE. Egret and Roxbury can start looking to next year

The T-51s are currently the 6th seed in the SCA, but could make a move. Oberland is in the middle in statistics: 7th in runs scored (324) and 6th in runs allowed (303). Therefore, they are about where they should be. They are also without two of their best pitchers in SP Ahsoka Tano (2-4, 3.83) and RP Aaron Geneva (2-1, 4.94) with injuries. On offense, they could use more power (tied for 7th with 76 home runs) but otherwise seem to be doing well despite not getting runs in. The middle of the lineup is decently good in 2B Odd Todd Walker (.294/11/37), 1B Foo Fieterz (.286/16/47), and SS Stromin Normin MacDonald (.320/12/40). On the mound, ace Emperry Alizm (7-4, 4.52) has struggled though he gets good run support. Starters Spider Caddell (5-6, 3.73) and Chemmix Tailorman (4-2, 3.10) have been pretty good. CL William Butcherman (15 SV, 3.38) has been decently good.

CBO Standings

CBO Players of the Week

June 8 - One of the league's most exciting young players, Bumpy Redfern of the County Crossing Bloodbugs earned himself North Charles Association Player of the Week honors with a standout performance in last week's games.

For the week the 25-year-old center fielder had a lofty .520 average (13-for-25), collecting 3 home runs, 9 RBIs and 5 runs scored.

For the year, Redfern is batting .394 with 61 hits and 9 home runs. He has scored 28 times and driven in 30.

Sheedy Smith demonstrated his potential to be a star in the game last week and today he took home the South Charles Association Player of the Week Award.

The Jamaica Plain first baseman wreaked havoc on opposing pitchers last week, pounding them for a .423 average (11-for-26) with 6 home runs and 13 RBIs on his way to claiming the honor.

On the year, Smith is hitting .353 with 67 hits, 14 home runs, 46 RBIs, .384 OBP and has scored 31 runs.

June 15 - Once you hit 35, it's hard to say how much time you've got left in baseball. Babs Rooth has been fortunate as his numbers for the past week bear out. The 35-year-old right fielder, a favorite in the County Crossing Bloodbugs clubhouse, hit .565 last week as he put up Player of the Week numbers.

Rooth also put together 13 hits in 23 at-bats, 4 home runs and 7 RBIs for the week.

This season, Rooth is batting .304 with 33 RBIs, 36 runs scored and 10 home runs.

It's always a thrill for fans of the team and students of the game alike when a superstar in the making shows what he's got. Enigma Montgomery, the Glowing Sea Radscorpions 24-year-old center fielder, put himself in the spotlight last week making him the clear-cut choice for South Charles Association Player of the Week honors.

He ripped 11 hits in 25 at-bats, compiling a .440 average with 2 home runs and 4 RBIs.

Montgomery is hitting .377 for the season with 13 home runs, 42 RBIs and 48 runs scored. He has 86 hits in 228 at-bats and played in 60 games.

CBO Noteworthy News

June 2 - Commissioner Nate Howard has spoked about some potential rules changes to aid pitching in the league. A commission of CBO personnel has looked at rules changes in the MLB, especially in the 20th Century, that aided pitching. Instead of the "Deadball Era" where few home runs were hit, there were other changes, like raising the mound to help pitching. Howard has noted that strikeouts are extremely low right now and would like to assist pitching in future seasons.

June 7 - Rookie 1B Sheedy Smith (2313 6th overall pick) already had May's top performance. Right now, he also has June's after he tied another CBO record, this time a 4-home run game.

Smith had a history-making game against the Southie Brews, clobbering 4 home runs in an awesome display of power in the 11-2 Red Rockets victory.

The Jamaica Plain first baseman, who is tied for 4th in the SCA in total bases with 124, went 5-for-5, had 9 RBI, and scored 4 times in the game.

"There have been a few times when I consciously tried to hit one out," said Smith later. "It doesn't often work, but it did today for the last one. I guess this day was just meant to be."

Sheedy Smith singled in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off Sham Killarney in the 3rd, hit a three-run home run off Sham Killarney in the 4th, hit a solo-shot off Cohort Williams in the 6th and hit a three-run home run off Ugly Ed Baker in the 8th.

As of June 7 this year, Smith has hit at a .353 clip with 67 hits, 14 home runs, 46 RBIs and 31 runs scored. He seems to be the favorite to be the SCA's Red Rocket Rookie Award recipient.

June 7 - The Party Boys Deedee Martinson wrote his name in the league history books by picking up career victory number 150 today against the Easy Town Assaultrons. In the Nordhagen Beach 5-4 triumph at Slocum's Joe Seaside Stadium, the 34-year-old hurler went 6 innings, allowed 1 hit and had 6 strikeouts and 4 walks.

"I won't forget this day," an emotional Martinson told reporters. "It's hard to stay at the top for so long and to win 150 games is quite a feat."

Lifetime Martinson has a 150-117 won-lost record with a 3.98 ERA. He has become the 20th player in CBO history with 150 wins. His teammate, BeachboyNut, is the all-time leader with 243 as of June 7.

CCBL Award Winners

Hitter - He may have less experience than most of his Commonwealth Collegiate Baseball League peers, but that didn't slow Terror Scheer down at all in 2314.

At the age of 18, the Endicott College shortstop has been named the winner of the Commonwealth Collegiate Baseball League Top Collegiate Hitter Award.

He had a .405 batting average and a .480 on-base percentage this year. In 60 games he piled up 96 hits, 14 doubles, 5 triples, 28 home runs, 58 RBIs and 70 runs scored.

But he certainly seems to be a quick study, as the Harwich Fishheads reliever was better than all others this year and has captured the 2314 South Region Reliever of the Year Award.

"I hope to win this a few more times before all is said and done in my career," the
Boston, Massachusetts native said.

For the season, Joneson had 7 saves in 20 relief appearances, which totaled 23. He fanned 24 betters, while walking 15 and put up a record of 1-0 to go with his 1.57 ERA.
