BNN Report

News from the CBO, Minors, CCBL, and CYL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

29 June 2314

CBO Analysis

At the nearly 60% mark of the season, we have now hit that time where we are a month away from the trade deadline. Some teams are trying to improve their teams in "win now" mode by grabbing some valuable veterans, while other teams will be looking to improve their future prospects. Right now, Vault 81, The Slog, and FHE are all appearing to be the "best" championship contenders, while teams like Goodneighbor, Jamaica Plain, and Sunshine Tidings need to think about what it will take to be in the championship running again. Here are the current team power rankings for Commonwealth Baseball Organization:

Teams (Total Points, Tendency):
1) Vault 81 Dwellers (130.5, o)
2) FHE Yao Guai (122.2, +)
3) Diamond City Swatters (116.6, +)
4) The Slog Ghouls (111.2, -)
5) Glowing Sea Radscorpions (107.9, ++)
6) Lexington Synths (104.9, ++)
7) Bunker Hill 75ers (101.5, +)
8) Quincy Gunners (100.9, ++)
9) Concord Radstags (100.5, --)
10) Fort Hagen Silver Shroud (100.2, --)
11) University Point Deathclaws (98.9, --)
12) Atom Cats (98.0, -)
13) Cambridge Coursers (96.0, +)
14) Southie Brews (89.7, ++)
15) Malden Grognaks (89.0, ++)
16) Oberland T-51s (86.3, --)
17) Salem Witch Hats (85.3, ++)
18) Easy Town Assaultrons (85.0, +)
19) Nahant Celtics (78.1, ++)
20) Starlight Killers (74.4, -)
21) Egret Ninjas (74.2, o)
22) County Crossing Bloodbugs (72.9, o)
23) Sunshine Tidings Chemists (72.8, +)
24) Spectacle Island Reapers (72.4, --)
25) Nordhagen Beach Party Boys (70.5, --)
26) Jamaica Plain Red Rockets (65.8, +)
27) Roxbury Rad Sox (59.1, --)
28) Goodneighbor Hancocks (56.6, o)

Brotherhood League

The Slog continues to hold a large lead in the BL, probably making this league the least dramatic and most certainly the weakest league in the CBO. After the Ghouls, Salem, Easy Town, Malden, Nordhagen Beach, County Crossing, and Nahant are all grouped together below .500 and within six games of one another. The Witch Hats trail Cambridge for the final playoff spot by five games.

The Grognaks are 4th in the standings of the 2310 expansion teams, though their .461 winning percentage currently would be their best in franchise history. They finished 55-75 (.423) in 2311. There are still some talent gaps for Malden, but there is also a promising young base in 2B Jack of Diamonds Cordero (.338/4/20), 3B Jacob Tarberry (.305/16/64), and SS G.B. Means (.292/5/19). The Grognaks are a bit better in the pitching department, currently 7th in runs allowed (382). Rookie SP Edgar Drezek (5-5, 3.78) who was a 3rd-round pick out of Nuka College in the 2313 Draft, has surprised acting as the ace. Ty Gibbs (4-10, 4.27) has a decent ERA but gets little run support.

Institute League

The top five teams in the IL are still rather tight. Fort Hagen holds a one-game lead over Lexington, Concord and Bunker Hill are tied for third at two games back, and Cambridge takes up the rear of the five at three games back. Starlight and Sunshine Tidings are fading away, making the season already seem "late" for them.

With a 6-4 mark in their last 10, Lexington has closed the gap with the Shroud and could be in position to win the IL for the first time in team history. The Synths did win the IL in 2297, but that record does not count toward the CBO. Right now, Lexington is struggling on offense, 11th in runs scored (356) thanks in part to the 14th-ranked average (.256), OBP (.313), and OPS (.732). The two players leading the way on offense are CF Packs Ton Kling (.279/23/54/19 SB) and 3B Tommy Whitetiger (.323/14/51). Whitetiger and CF Speedy Bugg (.301/11/32) are the only regulars hitting over .300. On the mound, the Synths are good, currently 3rd in runs allowed (337). Ace Lyle Pine (7-6, 2.72) has been pitching great despite little run support. SP Admiral Kelm (7-8, 3.56) is having good results in his first season not acting a full-time two-way player.

Minutemen League

No team is standing out right now, but there is a mucky contingency in the ML, much like the IL. Quincy and University Point are currently tied for 1st place with Atom just two back. Southie has been doing a little better as of late and now sits just a game back of .500. Spectacle Island, Jamaica Plain, and Goodneighbor are both a mouthful and in rebuilding mode.

The Red Rockets are only four years removed from being a regular contender. Now, they are trying to find something that works, which is not much. On offense, the Rockets are 10th in runs scored (368) with their one redeeming stat being home runs (5th at 101). Rookie 1B Sheedy Smith (.318/18/55) has emerged as the team leader, with aid from leadoff 3B Tre Morgueman (.281/11/44) and LF Ken Debate (.281/15/49). Pitching is 13th in runs allowed (435) with the 14th-best Starters ERA (5.44). All four starters' ERAs are over 5.00 with the best success coming from 35-year-old Dereek Green (8-4, 5.66). Ace Frank Heart (2-10, 5.70) needs time before he is fully ready, but he has taken a step back from his first two years with ERAs of 4.24 and 4.15.

Railroad League

With a 7-3 mark in their last 10, Vault 81 actually "struggled" and lost ground. That's because FHE went 9-1 in that stretch and have now closed the lead to just six games. Diamond City has been 8-2 in their last 10, making their mark only behind the Yao Guai. Glowing Sea is still holding on to the 6th playoff spot, while Oberland, on a four-game losing streak, is four back. Egret and Roxbury need to consider how to improve their teams for future seasons.

The Ninjas took a long time to male the playoffs, making their debut in 2305 and then becoming a semi-regular before dropping off again in 2312. With their current .440 winning percentage, Egret is having its worst year since thet finished 43-77 (.358) in 2304. The Ninjas are 8th in runs scored (374) thanks in part to the 7th-best OBP (.346). The middle of the lineup has been their best part of the lineup, with C Malificent Shaw (.336/9/37), 1B Dynamo Barnes (.329/11/41), and CF Copper Quartz (.305/15/52). The pitching has allowed the 10th most runs (392) thanks in part to the 13th-ranked Starters ERA (5.21). Rookie SP Sheldon Mayoral (3-5, 4.14), former 25th overall selection by Roxbury in 2311, is the only starter with a sub-5.00 ERA. Fellow rookie, Jafar Khassanov (6-9, 5.02) has the 2nd-best ERA. RPs Mike Pond (3-3, 3.45) and Outie Lett (4-1, 3.19) are the best in the bullpen.

CBO Standings

CBO Players of the Week

June 22 - This week's premier performer in the North Charles Association was center fielder Grandson Quarles of the Nahant Celtics.

He banged out a .500 average and was voted the Player of the Week. Over the last week Quarles socked 13 hits in 26 at-bats and 4 home runs, drove in 7 runs and scored 9 times.

In the current season, Quarles has put up a .314 batting average with 77 hits, 13 home runs, 31 runs batted in and scored 43 runs.

Barker Cocoa showed his stuff this past week as the veteran rode a hot streak all the way to South Charles Association Player of the Week honors.

The 35-year-old Deathclaws first baseman compiled a .500 average (11-for-22), 3 home runs and 10 RBIs.

Looking at his stats this year, Cocoa has compiled a .329 batting average, while hitting 24 home runs and driving in 62 runs. He has played in 69 games and scored 58 runs.

June 29 - It's always a thrill for fans of the team and students of the game alike when a superstar in the making shows what he's got. Mike Fountaineau, the Concord Radstags 20-year-old third baseman, put himself in the spotlight last week making him the clear-cut choice for North Charles Association Player of the Week honors.

He ripped 14 hits in 25 at-bats, compiling a .560 average with 2 home runs and 3 RBIs.

Currently Fountaineau has 18 home runs and a .281 batting average.

Jay Gabby of the Goodneighbor Hancocks had a fantastic week and today was voted the Player of the Week by the South Charles Association.

For the week Gabby batted .481 (13-for-27) with 2 home runs and 9 RBIs.

This season, Gabby is swinging the bat at a .299 rate with 88 hits in 294 at-bats. To date he has hit 14 home runs, scored 42 runs and driven in 58.

CBO Noteworthy News

June 18 - With the mid-season mark upon us, now is a great time to update the pre-season BNN Top 100 Prospect list with what we have learned to this point. This year, 21 year-old LF Lance Tinter of the Malden Grognaks is the #1 prospect overall.

Here is the top 10:
1) LF Lance Tinter, 21, Malden Grognaks
2) RHP Aaron Noluh, 20, Lexington Synths
3) 3B Ivan Abeyta, 19, Sunshine Tidings Chemists
4) 2B Zed Zded, 20, Goodneighbor Hancocks
5) 2B Gabe Clark, 21, Egret Ninjas
6) 1B Keen Sugiura, 21, Roxbury Rad Sox
7) RHP Petie Pembroke, 18, Diamond City Swatters
8) 3B Shane Powers, 18, Egret Ninjas
9) RF Clean Blake Dean, 20, Lexington Synths
10) SS Paper Mills, 21, Concord Radstags

June 27 - His goal at twenty was to win twenty games one year, pitch until he was thirty, win the league pennant and to make some money. Well, Alex Alexson did something even better -- the 35-year-old University Point Deathclaws star has now won 150 games in his career. That put him in a very select group of pitchers.

He joined that exclusive club today at Third Rail Stadium by whipping the Goodneighbor Hancocks 6-1, holding them to 4 hits in 6 innings while chalking up 4 strikeouts and 2 walks.

In the postgame interview, the modest Alexson said, "It's special to win 150 games. You don't do it by yourself. You do it with good stuff and a good bullpen. You are only as good as the guys behind you. Years from now I might look back on it and give myself a little pat on the back."

Over his career Alexson has 150 victories and 99 defeats with a 4.07 ERA. The 35-year-old hurler also has struck out 1576 batters in 2194 innings and surrendered 2121 hits.

NEBL All-Star Game

There's a whole lot of pride on the line when the best baseball players throughout New England Baseball League gather for the all-star game.

It was no different this year, as the Patriot League bested the Yankee League by a score of 9-2, in a spirited contest played at Firemen Park.

"It might be a little lower intensity than the regular season or playoffs, but everyone in that clubhouse still wants to win this game," said John Windman of the Patriot League, who was named the game MVP.

In a career spanning 148 games, Windman has batted .256 with 86 hits, 37 home runs, 75 RBIs, and 61 runs scored.

What's the best league? The Patriot League or the Yankee League? The answer will be found in the New England Baseball League All-Star Game. All the votes have been counted and tabulated, all the players have been selected, and they will decide the question on the baseball diamond.

MML All-Star Game

All-Star Revere Beach Shoremen's first baseman Keen Sugiura had a night to remember.

Not only did he take the field with the game's best players, he was also a huge factor in the 14-0 Legends League victory over the Stars League All-Stars.

"We had a meeting before the game, and I was struck by the talent in the room. Old stars, young stars, it's a game I'll never forget," Sugiura said. "I talked to a few of my friends from back home, and they told me to go out and win the game for them. I'm sure they'll be thrilled."

The Legends League All-Stars versus the Stars League All-Stars. It happens every year halfway through the season. It's a baseball spectacle for the fans and the players alike. It's the 2314 Massachusetts Minor League All-Star Game. The fans get to see all their favorite stars perform in the same game, and the outstanding players get to play against each other. The players are out to prove that their league is the best. Players are chosen by a vote of the fans.
