The September 1 Super Post, Part 1
CBO Players of the Month
NCA Hitter - Thatch Heard may be much younger than other hitters in the North Charles Association, but he performed like a seasoned veteran in August to win the Batter of the Month award.
The 21-year-old Salem right fielder hit .368 with 11 home runs, 28 RBIs and 20 runs scored.
This season, Heard is hitting .350 with 184 hits, 40 home runs, 129 RBIs, scored 100 runs and played in 126 games.
SCA Hitter - FHE Yao Guai fans believe they've got a talented young star in Missile Crews.
He did nothing to dissuade that notion in August, as he hit .424 with 10 home runs, 30 RBIs and 28 runs scored.
The end result was the center fielder being named the South Charles Association Batter of the Month.
To date, Crews has collected 153 hits for a .320 average. He has posted 27 home runs, scored 116 runs and driven in 92 runs.
NCA Pitcher - The Pitcher of the Month has been chosen and the North Charles Association trophy went to The Slog hurler, Flirt Perez.
During the month, Perez was impressive with a 2.44 ERA and 4 wins and no losses. In 51.2 innings he struck out 31 and gave up 46 hits and 18 walks.
To date this year, Perez has compiled a 12-7 mark with a 3.53 ERA in 30 starts.
SCA Pitcher - When Exxie Summerset takes the mound, a Vault 81 victory is usually the result. At least that's the way it was in August.
He excelled with a 6-1 mark and a 2.47 ERA in 7 starts, tossed 51 innings, fanned 38 and held opposing batters to a .225 average.
That's why the Dwellers starter was honored today as the Pitcher of the Month by the South Charles Association.
In 32 starts this season, Summerset has notched a 22-5 record and a 2.96 ERA.
NCA Rookie - Miko Miko earned August's Rookie of the Month honors in the North Charles Association for last month's performance. The boyish Bunker Hill third baseman might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.
Miko hit .400 with 3 home runs, 24 RBIs and 16 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.
So far on the season, Miko is hitting .405 with 18 home runs, 83 RBIs and 77 runs scored. He has 173 hits and played in 121 games.
SCA Rookie - Youngster Copper Quartz emerged as the latest South Charles Association Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Egret deserved the honor, batting .337 with 6 home runs and 20 runs batted in. Is the month of August a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Quartz enjoy the limelight.
Thus far this season, Quartz has hit .311 with 25 home runs, 86 RBIs and scored 77 times.
CBO Records
There were only three individual season records set or tied in 2314, all in pitching:
Wins - 22 - Exxie Summerset, Vault 81; Previous Record - 22 - Summerset, Vault 81, 2306 and Heaven Fontenot, Goodneighbor, 2311
Summerset tied his own record originally set eight years earlier by winning 22 of 27 decisions in 2314. The former 3rd overall pick in 2301 by Finch Farm (now Nahant) now has 160 career wins (t-18th all-time) and three 20+ win seasons (1st all-time).
Games Started - 35 - Pete Holster, Glowing Sea/Roxbury; Previous Record - 35 - Isaiah Swindler, The Slog, 2310
Holster pitched in a role as an "opener" for the Radscorpions in 35 of his 46 appearances. That means that he preceeded the actual SP and thus got credit for the start in those games. Once he was cut and signed with the Rad Sox, Holster appeared in only one more game, starting none.
H/9 IP - 6.41 - SP Lyle Pine, Lexington; Previous record - 6.42 - SP Wilson Beachball, University Point, 2301
The former 2nd-overall pick (Quincy, 2304) had his best season as a pro, allowing only 141 hits in 198.0 innings to set the record. Pine also led the CBO in WHIP with 1.07.
CBO Top Performances
August Hitter - RF Candy Kline, Atom - Kline came nowhere near matching Jamaica Plain rookie Sheedy Smith's record performance on June 7 (score of 151), but his 120-point performance on August 19 was the top performance of August and 3rd overall on the season. In an 8-3 victory over County Crossing, Kline went 4 for 5 with three home runs, three runs, and all eight RBI. Both his homer numbers and RBI tied Atom records. Kline hit a three-run bomb in the 1st, a solo shot in the 3rd, and a two-run shot in the 5th. In the 6th, Kline added a two-RBI single.
August Pitcher - SP Cohort Williams, Southie - In a month with a perfect game (tied for 5th best performance score on the season, showing we do not at all understand the performance scores), Williams' no-hitter ranked as August's top performance and tied for the best performance score of the season with 94 points. Ty Gibbs' June performance also had a 94 score. In his no-hitter on August 22 against Goodneighbor, Williams came as close as one could be to a perfect game. Williams pitched nine no-hit innings, walking none, and striking out seven. The one step away from perfection came with one out in the top of the 7th when Williams plunked the Hancocks' Zed Zded to break up the perfect game. Williams then retired the rest and faced the minimum of 27 batters since Zded was caught stealing.
