In a few days I will be asking for some images of players from 1990, but before that, as I complete my 1990 project, I do have two questions, and I hope no one will object if this is not the correct place.

As I read through newspapers to track active roster moves during the regular season, a couple of things often confuse me:

If a player is "placed on waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release" is this synonymous with actually being "released"? Or are there two steps 1) waived, and at a later date, 2) released? If so, being "waived" does take a player of the active roster, correct?

Also, if a player is "claimed off waivers" is this synonymous with the player being "purchased"?
