In a later season, I became the GM/Coach of the Canadian national team. I have a couple of Canadian star players who would normally get chosen to the Olympics and the World Cup. But no player from any country, on my NHL roster, ever has gone to the IIHF World Championship. Being the GM this time, I can see that none of my players even appear on the national team's 'possible players' list. So that's why they don't get picked since they aren't even on the list where they could be picked.
However, this year had both the Olympics and the World Championship. I was indeed able to pick these players for the Olympics - they were on that list as they should, able to be picked. Not so for the WC.
But, since these players had already played in the Olympics, they were remaining on the stats page of Team Canada when I entered the WC. From that list I was able to pick these players for the WC team and they ended up playing there.
Clearly something wrong with the 'possible players' list. For the WC it seems to exclude everyone from a human player's team.
