Cards news: April 15 -- DH J.D. Martinez sent to Dodgers for outfield prospect
Although, it might seem a bit early to pull a trigger on a trade the St. Louis Cardinals did that sending veteran DH J.D. Martinez to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for minor-league outfielder Chris Newell.
St. Louis hoped the 37-year-old Martinez could fill the role of designated hitter along with providing veteran leadership.
But Martinez doesn't seem to have much left in the tank.
In 10 starts, Martinez has hit just .083 with one RBI.
The Dodgers seemed to want him -- and the Cardinals seem to have other options at DH -- so St. Louis pulled the trigger.
Newell, 23, was drafted by the Dodgers in the 13th round of the 2022 MLB draft.
Combining all levels, he has hit .228 with 48 home runs and 139 RBIs in 222 games/201 starts.
