On January 15, 1884, a young St. Louis millionaire named Henry Lucas announced the formation of a third "major" base ball league: the Union Association.
The UA would have 12 teams:
To meet the threat, the National and American loops each added two more teams: The National added the
Pittsburgh Yellow Jackets (to take on the new UA club in that city) and the
Jersey City Skeeters. Meanwhile, the American Association also expanded to sixteen teams with two teams in Ohio: the
Columbus Buckeyes and the
Toledo Blue Sox.
All three leagues will use the usual five-team playoff (the new league will compete for the "Union Cup") and the season will be extended to 120 games.
