As usual, our season begins with the
1895 British Home Championship! England want to prevent another embarrassment after allowing Wales to take the cup home last year.
The Three Lions come in as favorites, as absolute stars like Douglas Gilbert, Thomas Barrett, Leon Taylor and Mason Price make up the heart of their order. 3x Pitcher of the Year Keith Coleman leads a rotation that also includes Peter Neilson and Darren Hutton. Peter Neilson won the 1893 Pitcher of the Year award and is set to make his BHC debut along with 23 year old SS Aidan Jackson and C Steve Clarke who takes over from Sean Bernerd. This tournament is, as usual, England's to lose.
Scotland have a strong squad, with a lineup powered by the Lewises (Johnston and Morrison). Dylan Anderson takes the ace mantle from Benjamin Boyd, now 34, after leading the Scottish league in WAR two years in a row. Leith's Lewis Mitchell is also making his Scotland debut as the #2 in the rotation. Mitchell had the lowest walk ratio in Scotland in 1894: just 34 in 176 innings. 3B Craig Johnstone impressed everyone with a 1.090 OPS in the Scottish second division, which was good enough for manager Steven Thompson to call him up. The Tartan Army will certainly put up a fight, but they'll depend more on England slipping than their own talents to make it to the top.
Wales surprised everyone by winning their first trophy last year after their offense went off and despite mediocre pitching. Should some results go their way again this year, they might be looking at an unlikely repeat. Their core from last year is intact, and it might be the last shot at a title for guys like Shane Pollard (36), Fergus Harper (31), Brian Algar (33) and Ashley Reader (32). LF Ronald Graham will make his debut, it will be the first we see of him after he was discovered by Sheffield United a couple months ago.
Finally, Ireland will be looking at getting even more consistent. After not winning a single game in the first three editions of the BHC, they've now got a pair of 3rd place finishes under their belt. Their batting average has gone from .156 in 1889 to .314 last year, while their ERA dropped from 9.00 to 5.67 in the same period. Steve Lawrence could push their ERA even lower. The 35 year old workhorse will make his debut for Ireland after winning the Player of the Year award with a 1.77 ERA through 8 starts. Nothing is really expect of the Irish squad, but they have been improving year after year.

Wales vs Ireland
The tournament opener is won by the Irish squad, after scoring runs in each of the first 4 innings, with a final score of 6-3. 3B Fionn Bailey had 3 hits, including a 2 run homer and an RBI triple (total, 4 RBI), to earn PotG honors. RF Ronald Graham tallies 2 runs with a single in the 8th to give Wales a 6-4 win on day 2. Douggie Murray is named Player of the Game after earning just 2 runs in a complete game. His 3 strikeouts this game take him to 75 career BHC Ks, overtaking Everton Taylor's 73. Maolruanaí Clark shuts out the Dragons on just 3 hits, which worked wonders because the offense could only muster up 3 runs. Ireland takes the series 2-1!
Scotland vs England
Keith Coleman recovered nicely from a 4 run first inning and held the Scots scoreless while the offense did their job for a 9-4 English win on Opening Day. Another 9-4 game goes England's way on day 2, and DH Leon Taylor was the highlight. Taylor went 4-4 with a double and 2 RBI. Also notably, Mo Humphries had a pair of triples. A 7th inning rally powered by Ian Wallis and Lewis Johnston pushes Scotland past England with a final score of 5-3. Benjamin Boyd is named player of the game due to his 3 run, complete game effort. Still, England takes the opening series.
England and Ireland take an early lead, with Wales and Scotland doing the chasing going into the second series.
Ireland vs Scotland
Scotland proves why they're the better team with a 14-2 dismantling of Ireland. C Aidan Weir had a record-setting game hitting 9th: 5-5, 2 3B, 2 RBI, 5 R. That means new records for hits and runs scored in a game! The Scots continue their domination of Ireland with an 11-1 game on day 2. This time 1B Kai Reid took home the award after a 4-5 night with a double, a triple and a pair of RBI. Maolruanaí Clark continues his great run in this BHC with a 1-run masterpiece on 121 pitches, just enough for Ireland to go 2-1 up on Scotland in Game 3. Still, Scotland takes the series 2-1.
Wales vs England
Just a couple hours later, Gilbert ties the record after going 5-7 in a 19-2 win for England. Keith Coleman takes home the PotG award after allowing just 2 runs on 4 hits in a complete game. Game 2 was a close affair, with Leon Taylor's RBI double in the 7th being the difference maker in a 4-3 game that went England's way. Peter Neilson is named player of the game despite allowing 3 runs on 10 hits. The Three Lions sweep the Dragons with an 18-7 game to close things out. Mason Price with a 4-5 game, 2 2B and 2 RBI takes home the PotG.
England cement themselves into first place, with Scotland and Ireland a sweep away from a title. Wales are mathematically out of the race.
Scotland vs Wales
Scotland claw back in the 9th for a 6-6 tie in game 1. Kai Reid is on a tear, hitting .593/.645/.778 this Championship, adding a 3-4 game with 3 RBI and another MVP performance. Another late offensive performance gives Scotland a 6-3 win where Lewis Morrison with 3 RBI on 3 hits was the star. Yet another 6-6 tie culminates both Scotland and Wales' disappointing campaigns.
England vs Ireland
England secure their 6th trophy in an absolutely historic 14-3 win over Ireland! Keith Coleman allows 3 runs on 5 hits for his 15th all-time win, overtaking Christopher Clark on the BHC wins leaderboard. Douglas Gilbert also broke a record, with his 18th (and later 19th) hit making him the single season record holder in this category. England leave no doubt as to who the best team is this year and blank Ireland 8-0 behind Peter Neilson. At half gas, England complete the sweep and end the season 8-1 for the first time in history. The only other 1-loss season was in their 1892 title winning campaign, which ended 7-1-1.
England win their 6th British Home Championship! Their .394 average was their best to date.
