Recap
Not even a week off could slow the meteoric ascent of Dode Caudill, who finally got a well deserved FABL Player of the Week. At least his third week of the season where he hit over .500, I think it was the escalating extra base hits that did it, as Dode was 13-for-23 with a double, 2 triples, 3 homers, 10 RBIs, 7 runs, 3 walks, and a steal. He was the main reason we were able to beat the Kings, as in both wins he was 4-for-5 and outscored the pennant winners on his own, and the game he didn't start we didn't win. Taking advantage of a spot-starter, Dode homered twice and was a single away from the cycle. Scoring and driving in 3 runs, he was impactful without it, and he had no issue singling the next day. All four hits were singles this time, driving in one and scoring twice. Responsible for 3 of the 4 runs, he came close to half the hits for the team as well. Now close to a 25/25 season, he's collected exactly 200 hits and hit .326/.389/.541 (146 OPS+). Filling the stat sheet, he's been attributed with 28 doubles, 16 triples, 24 homers, 80 RBIs, 126 runs, 65 walks, 23 steals, and 6.4 WAR, more in literally every category then I would have expected when the season began.
Funny enough, he wasn't the only guy to hit .500 this week, as Tom Halliday was an even 11-for-22 with 2 doubles, a triple, a homer, 7 RBIs, 8 runs, and 2 walks. Now normally that would be the best part of the week, getting huge production from our talented defender, but it's not even the best Halliday related news of the week! After his most recent scouting report, he's now just an arm away from Carlos Jaramillo, as Dixie Marsh has gone and upped Halliday's error and double play rating to a 5. It seems to make sense, as the few months away from 25-year-old has a 21.9 zone rating and 1.098 efficiency, good enough for 2nd and 3rd in FABL respectively. Starting 151 of our 157 games at short, he's been a huge part of our success in preventing runs, and it's nice to see his batting line up to a more respectable .257/.327/.352 (82 OPS+). Even average offensive production would make him one of the most valuable shortstops in the game, and with his speed and ability to put the ball in play he has all the natural tools to carve out a long career.
Another guy who's hot and deserves a shutout is Hank Walker, who beat both the Imps and Kings this week. Going 7 in each, he was actually better against the Kings, with Jerry McMillan's 3rd error the only way the guests got a run. Sure, he did walk 5 and allow 6 hits with just a single strikeout, but a win is a win and he's done a lot of that this season. 14-5, his 13th win was statistically better, with 3 hits, 3 walks, 2 runs, and 5 strikeouts. Somehow the best Cougar this year, he's on track to finish as the qualified starter with the most wins and lowest ERA on the team. I hope Pug White ends up winning more games, he's at 13, but has no impact on the race between Walker and Ken Stone. His 3.62 ERA (114 ERA+) is now lower then Stone's 3.84 (109 ERA+), but both have one more start to make. Just for fun I'm putting Don Griffin in the pen, as his 30 starts lead the team and he doesn't really need another. For better or worse, he's my project, as I'm absolutely convinced he can be an ace level pitcher.
He just needs some work. I can fix him! I know it!
Looking Ahead
Just five games. That's it. And we can finish no lower then third. With 92 wins, we're within striking distance of the 94-win Stars. We have an extra loss, placing us two and a half back, but our schedule is significantly tougher. It starts with our last home series, two games with the Toronto Wolves. Ken Stone (12-7, 3.84, 118) and John Mitchell (7-2, 1, 3.34, 62) will take the mound for us, but with an off day and final week they can do whatever they choose. They have plenty to play for, as with 81 wins they'll at least be .500, and they have 5th place to play for. Tied with the Cannons, they'll want to win every game they can, as they're starting to establish themselves as a legit contender. They've got a nice new slugger in Chuck Reed (.305, 35, 96), who set the Wolves team record with 35 home runs. One of many talented players, they've gotten good seasons from Phil Story (.284, 15, 56, 13), Sid Cullen (.307, 22, 70), Ed Savage (.292, 23, 89), and Jesse Taylor (.261, 21, 64, 11). Add in a bounce back from Tom Reed (.234, 19, 71) and the pitching, and this Wolves team can be a real thorn in our sides.
In case you forgot, we now finish in Kansas City, which might actually be a good thing. Likely to rest their best guys, we'll have a chance to add to their 49 losses. I really want to win this series, though I do want Hank Williams (.374, 43, 139) to complete his Triple Crown. Jack Gibson (.289, 39, 104) had no setbacks, so he could have been competing this week, but I can't see our slugger making up the four homer difference. It's not that six homer weeks aren't possible, something I think he's already done, but Williams is just too good. His worst season WRC+ is the 184 he has in September. Dode is at 203, which is super awesome, but that would be 4th if it was Hank Williams month. The dude is just that good. He deserves a ring and I really hope it is this year. Because I really, really, really want to win. Like go on a three year run. Prime Hank needs to get his ring! And then maybe, just maybe, he'll stick to personal accolades and not winning titles. Ha!
A guy can dream though, right?
Man the offseason can't get here soon enough. My trade finger is getting really itchy. Really itchy!
