Cards news: July 13 -- RP Hence, C Bernal and 2B Wetherholt will play in Prospects Game
The St. Louis Cardinals have learned that relief pitcher Tink Hence (AA Peoria), catcher Leonardo Bernal (AAA Memphis) and second baseman J.J. Wetherholt (AAA Memphis) have been named to the National League roster for the upcoming Prospects Game.
Hence, 22, missed the start of the season with an undisclosed injury but has served as the closer for AA Peoria since his return.
In 16 games he has gone 3-3 with nine saves and a 6.75 ERA.
A second-round pick in the 2020 draft, Hence has worked 14.2 innings during which he has struck out 18 and posted a 2.11 WHIP.
Bernal has split the season between AA Springfield (57 games) and AAA Memphis (9 games).
In his 66 games/63 starts, the 21-year-old has hit .288 with 11 home runs, 37 RBIs and 35 runs scored.
Bernal was signed as an international free agent in January 2021.
The seventh overall pick in the 2024 draft, Wetherholt has spent the 2025 season at AAA Memphis.
Serving as the lead-off hitter for the Redbirds, the 22-year-old has hit .265 with five home runs, 31 RBIs and 49 runs scored in 81 games/80 starts.
Wetherholt has got on base at a .367 clip and is slugging .391.
