MLB news: Sept. 26 -- Cardinals assured of wild-card berth
With a 5-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants, the St. Louis Cardinals clinched one of the National League wild-card berths.
The Cardinals (83-76) sit in third place in the National League Central Division, 12.5 games in back of the first-place Chicago Cubs.
Right now, the Cardinals are the No. 2 wild card, trailing fellow NL Central foe Cincinnati by a half-time with three games left on their schedule.
St. Louis will have to finish ahead of the Reds to earn the No. 1 wild-card slot as the Reds won the season series 8-5.
The Cardinals sit 1.5 games ahead of the Mets for the No. 2 wild card.
St. Louis last reached the playoffs in 2023. The Cardinals last World Series appearance came in 2013, when they fell to the Boston Red Sox in six games.
