Cards news: Jan. 10 -- Free agent catcher Kelly and outfielder De La Cruz agree to deals
The St. Louis Cardinals have announced they have signed catcher Carson Kelly and outfielder Bryan De La Cruz to contract.
Kelly, 31, began his career with the Cardinals but it being during the Yadier Molina-era struggled to find playing time.
He spent five seasons with the Diamondbacks after leaving following the 2019 season.
Since that time, he has played with Detroit, Texas and Minnesota.
In 20225, while with the Twins, he played in 25 games/23 starts during which he hit .195 with four home runs and 95 RBIs.
The Cardinals are hoping Kelly can serve as the backup to starter Ivan Herrera, while also allowing them to allow prospects Leonardo Bernal and Jimmy Crooks to get consistent playing time in the minors.
De La Cruz, 29, was added as outfield depth at the corner outfield positions.
Last season, he played at at AAA Indianapolis hitting .302 with 19 home runs and 55 RBIs.
The 2024 season saw him play for the Marlins, getting into 105 games/54 starts during which he hit .245 with 18 home runs and 51 RBIs.
