Game 83: San Diego Padres vs. Boston Red Sox

A nice win for the home team today, as the offense hit the ball well. In picking up the 14 to 4 victory, the Boston Red Sox (46-37) outmatched the visiting San Diego Padres (45-42).

Garrett Whitlock (4-6) picked up the win but again had a shaky performance in which he allowed 4 earned runs on 7 hits and 2 walks while striking out 6 in 6 innings of play; Game Score 46. Isiah Campbell (SV 1) picked up the save for his 3 innings of scoreless relief work. I am not very confident in games Whitlock starts and have started to consider moving him to the bullpen and bring Pivetta back into the rotation. The Red Sox offense was firing well today, led by Tristan Casas (1 for 2, Homerun, 4 Runs, 2 RBI, 2 Walks, Hit-by-Pitch), Jarren Duran (3 for 4, 3 Doubles, 3 Runs, Walk), Rafael Devers (2 for 5, Double, Triple, 3 RBI), Marcelo Meyer (2 for 5, Double, Run, 4 RBI), and Masataka Yoshida (3 for 4, Double, 3 Runs, RBI, Walk).

The Padres turned to Joe Musgrove (5-9) for the start, but he lasted just 2 innings after serving up 7 earned runs on 6 hits, 4 walks, and a hit batsman; Game Score 10. The combined relief work of Wandy Peralta (3 earned runs on 3 hits and 1 walk) and Stephen Kolek (4 earned runs on 6 hits and 1 walk) were ineffective. Former Red Sox Chris Martin pitched a scoreless final inning. At the plate, Fernando Tatis Jr. (1 for 4, Homerun, Run, RBI), Luis Campusano (1 for 4, Homerun, Run, RBI), and Jake Croenworth (2 for 4, 2 RBI, Stolen Base) had a solid day.

Player of the Game: Tristan Casas (Season: #3)

AL East Standings: 1st Place, 1 Game Lead
