2030 World Baseball Championship

The 2030 World Baseball Championship was the 84th edition of the event and was hosted in San Salvador, the first time it was held in Central America since Panama City in 2021. A very competitive Division 1 saw Algeria emerge on top narrowly at 8-3 for their second-ever division title (2012). Australia, Mexico, and Sudan were each one back at 7-4 while Guatemala and Italy were both 6-5.
Traditional powers tied at 10-1 atop Division 2 with the United States advancing over Canada via the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Americans ended a rare multi-year division title drought, advancing for the 62nd time overall. Last year’s runner-up Taiwan was a mediocre 5-6. D3 saw the Czech Republic first at 9-2 while China and the Dominican Republic were the closest competitors at 7-4. It was the sixth division title for the Czechs, who last did it back in 2021.
Venezuela (9-2) fended off last year’s third place finisher Japan and Slovakia at 8-3. It was the seventh time moving forward for the Venezuelans, ending a 13-year drought. India dominated Division 5 at 10-1 for their second division title in three years and 11th overall.
Division 6 had a first-time winner with Afghanistan at 9-2, who held off 8-3 runs by Romania, South Korea, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Afghans became the 85th different country to make it to the elite eight at least once. The reigning world champ Pakistan struggled to 3-8.
There was a three-way tie at 8-3 in Division 7 between Germany, Brazil, and Serbia. The Germans advanced on the tiebreaker for their 15th division crown and first since 2026. Lastly, Bolivia claimed D8 at 9-2 with Egypt, Indonesia, and Myanmar each next at 7-4. The Bolivians got their second-ever division title, previously doing it way back in 1973, a 57 year gap. No teams from 2029’s elite eight made it back in 2030.
Double Round Robin Group A saw the USA on top at 5-1 to earn a 54th semifinal trip. The Americans had missed the final four in the prior five seasons, their longest-ever drought. Algeria earned their first semifinal trip at 3-3 with both Afghanistan and the Czech Republic eliminated at 3-3. The Algerians became the 53rd different nation to make it to the final four.
In Group B, India (5-1) and Germany (4-2) moved forward while Venezuela (2-4) and Bolivia (1-5) were eliminated. The Indians earned their sixth appearance in the semifinal and their third in six years. The Germans got through for the ninth time and for the first time since taking third in 2024.
Both semifinal matchups ended up as 3-0 sweeps. The United States rolled Germany to advance to the World Championship for the 50th time. Algeria upset India to continue their unexpected run, becoming the 35th country to get to the final. They joined Nigeria as the only African countries to get this far. The 2030 final would be only the second finale in two decades to not have a European and/or Asian team.

In the 84th World Championship, Algeria pulled off the shocking upset of the Americans in a seven-game classic. The Algerians became the 23rd nation to win it all and the first of the Arab countries to do so. Algeria managed to win it all despite having only a +1 run differential for the event at 98 runs scored and 97 allowed. They also joined Nigeria as the only African nations with a world title.
Parity continued for the top spot with the 11th different champ in as many years. The United States now hadn’t won it all in a decade after previously never going longer than three years between rings. The USA was now 41-9 all-time in their finals trips, having lost their last three (2023, 24, 30).
Leading the way for Algeria was Tournament MVP Bouazza Malik, a third-year starting first baseman for WAB’s Bouake. The 26-year old lefty had 28 hits, 22 runs, 5 doubles, 13 home runs, 21 RBI, 12 walks, 72 total bases, 1.226 OPS, and 1.7 WAR over 27 games. Best Pitcher went to Chad’s Lawal Deffalah, entering his third season with AAB’s Kinshasa. The 23-year old lefty tossed 14.2 scoreless innings with 27 strikeouts, four walks, and four hits allowed.

Other notes: American Jude Hoffer drew 28 walks, tying the WBC record set in 1952 by his countryman Jaxson Bradley. 2030’s lone no-hitter came from Finland’s Kim Kemppainen with 15 strikeouts and one walks facing Saudi Arabia on January 20. Below are the updated all-time event stats:
